Job Description

The Outdoor Recreation Worker provides customer service, program instruction, education, and guidance to various patrons. This position requires applicants to be 16 years of age or older.

The job may require successful completion of a background check. The job requires the ability to maintain a collaborative and cooperative working relationship with elected and appointed officials, other City employees, other organizations, and the general public. Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.

The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, in wet and humid conditions, with areas of dust, odors, mist, gases or other airborne matter. Employees work in/at places where they are exposed to mechanical hazards. This position works: days, evenings, and weekends as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides program management to complex programs such as TWEENS/TEENS, provides volunteer coordination, training to other division staff members, and serves as supervisor in the absence or Outdoor Recreation Manager.

  • Assists in the development of curriculum for new classes and events, and evaluates cost recovery for existing events.

  • Demonstrates and/or possesses extensive knowledge of wilderness medicine, endurance sports, rock climbing, whitewater, backpacking and Nordic skiing, including instructional foundations and advanced practice.

  • Demonstrates and/or possesses an in-depth understanding of all aspects of Outdoor Recreation Division programming, and serves as point of contact for large swaths of program/event participants.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field, or extensive experience managing Nordic ski or other experiential education facilities is required.

  • Assistant Manager must possess and maintain certifications in Swift Water Rescue, Wilderness First Responder, American Mountain Guide Association and Professional Ski Instructors of America - Nordic.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED;

  • Basic First Aid certification may be required;

  • Wilderness First Responder certification may be required;

  • CPR certification may be required;

  • Swift Water Rescue, American Mountain Guide Association or Professional Ski Instructors of America – Nordic certification may be required;

  • Idaho Driver’s license is required.

An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, climb ladders, work at heights, and in confined spaces. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required.
