HDI Specialty Equine is seeking an experienced and motivated Equine Senior Mortality Underwriter to join our growing team. This role is responsible for underwriting and managing a profitable portfolio of equine mortality business while delivering exceptional service.
The Equine Senior Mortality Underwriter will serve as a subject matter expert, providing technical underwriting guidance, supporting agency development, and contributing to strategic initiatives that drive profitable growth. The ideal candidate combines strong equine industry knowledge with sound underwriting judgment, relationship-building skills, and a commitment to operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
  • Underwrite and manage new and renewal equine mortality business in accordance with company underwriting guidelines, authority levels, and profitability objectives.
  • Evaluate mortality exposures and risk characteristics, including horse use, discipline, value, health history, ownership structure, and geographic considerations.
  • Analyze applications, veterinary certificates, loss history, financial information, and supporting documentation to make sound underwriting decisions.
  • Determine appropriate terms, conditions, exclusions, deductibles, and pricing based on risk assessment. Maintain underwriting profitability through disciplined portfolio management, risk selection, and retention strategies.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with agents, brokers, insureds, veterinarians, and industry partners. Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned agencies and provide superior customer service and underwriting support.
  • Identify growth opportunities within existing agency relationships and support the appointment and onboarding of new agency partners.
  • Collaborate with claims, compliance, accounting, and operations teams to ensure seamless customer experience.
  • Assist in developing underwriting guidelines, procedures, training materials, and best practices.
  • Monitor market trends, industry developments, and competitor activity within the equine insurance marketplace.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior underwriting staff.
  • Participate in agency visits, industry conferences, horse shows, and other business development activities as needed.
  • Contribute to departmental projects, operational improvements, and strategic initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Insurance, Agriculture, Animal Science, Equine Studies, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • 5+ years of equine mortality underwriting experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of equine mortality insurance products, underwriting principles, policy forms, exclusions, and risk assessment practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate complex equine risks and make sound underwriting decisions.
  • Experience managing agency relationships and a book of business with profitability and growth objectives.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and decision-making abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
Compensation and Benefits:
Base salary range for this position is $100,000 – 110,000, plus eligibility for a performance-based annual bonus. Actual compensation will be based on a variety of factors including experience, education, and location.
