Sustaining Test Engineer information
What is the difference between Sustaining Test Engineer vs Test Engineer?
| Aspect | Sustaining Test Engineer | Test Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Responsibilities | Maintains and supports existing products, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring quality over product lifecycle. | Designs and develops new testing procedures, performs initial testing, and validates new products. |
| Work Environment | Primarily in production and support settings, focusing on product reliability. | Mostly in R&D or development labs, focusing on new product development. |
| Credentials | Typically requires a degree in engineering or related field, often with certifications in testing or quality. | Requires similar credentials, often with additional emphasis on design and development skills. |
While both roles require engineering knowledge and testing skills, a Sustaining Test Engineer focuses on maintaining and supporting existing products, whereas a Test Engineer is more involved in developing and validating new products. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job focus.
Job description
Building the people that build the world.
With platforms in HVAC and Detection and Measurement, SPX Technologies builds innovative solutions that enable a safer, more efficient, sustainable world. Through our RiSE talent development framework, we Reach, Identify, Strengthen, and Engage our employees to support them in their continued development. We're a global company of problem solvers, collaborators, and innovators, and our businesses build solutions that impact the world.
This is a position with The Marley Company, a parent company which provides administrative support to the SPX Enterprises HVAC Heating businesses (such as WM Technologies, LLC, Marley Engineered Products, LLC, Patterson-Kelley, LLC)Â and includes all Weil-McLain branded products.
How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)
As a Test Technician II (HVAC - Engineering Laboratory), you will support engineering and lab operations by building, maintaining, and troubleshooting test equipment and product test setups used to evaluate performance and support product development. Under limited supervision, you will interpret engineering drawings and specifications to assemble, modify, and validate test systems, ensuring accurate and reliable data collection. This role plays a critical part in executing product testing to industry standards, supporting engineering analysis, and maintaining the functionality, safety, and readiness of laboratory equipment and systems.
What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)
While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:
- Test Equipment Assembly & Modification
- Plan, layout, assemble, and modify test equipment and structural assemblies using blueprints, engineering drawings, and sketches.
- Construct and assemble product prototypes, test systems, and experimental setups based on engineering requirements and performance criteria.
- Modify equipment by adding, removing, or altering components in accordance with defined diagrams and specifications.
- Fabricate and modify components using sheet metal tools, soldering equipment, and basic machine shop equipment to support testing and development activities.
- Testing & Data Collection
- Set up and operate test equipment and product assemblies to evaluate performance under varying operating conditions.
- Conduct testing in accordance with applicable industry and regulatory standards (e.g., ANSI, ASHRAE, CSA, IEC, or similar).
- Install and configure instrumentation and data acquisition systems, including thermocouples, RTDs, and related sensors.
- Collect, compile, and summarize test data to support engineering analysis and product validation.
- Review test results with engineering to identify and resolve product or equipment issues, malfunctions, or incomplete data.
    3.  Troubleshooting & Maintenance
- Diagnose test equipment malfunctions and perform repairs, adjustments, or component replacements as required.
- Troubleshoot test irregularities related to both equipment performance and product functionality, working with engineering to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Adjust, calibrate, and maintain test systems to ensure accuracy, reliability, and repeatability of results.
- Perform routine maintenance and servicing of lab equipment to minimize downtime and ensure operational readiness.
4. Troubleshooting & Maintenance
- Follow and enforce established laboratory safety procedures, including safe handling of fuels, electrical systems, and mechanical equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment, ensuring proper setup and shutdown of equipment and test systems.
- Inspect lab equipment and test setups to ensure safe and compliant operation prior to and during testing activities.
    5.  Tools & Equipment Usage
- Utilize hand tools, small power tools, and various measuring and testing devices to complete assigned tasks safely and effectively.
- Operate fabrication and shop equipment as needed to support prototype development and test setup modifications.
What we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education)
We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:
Required Experience
- Experience working with mechanical or electrical test equipment, assembly, or maintenance in a manufacturing, lab, or engineering environment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and technical schematics.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills related to equipment and systems.
- Basic knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical components, and testing methods.
- Ability to work under general supervision while managing assigned tasks and priorities.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications for data entry, documentation, and test reporting.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience supporting engineering lab environments, product testing, or prototype development.
- Familiarity with industry testing standards (e.g., ANSI, CSA, ASHRAE, or similar certification requirements).
- Hands-on experience with fabrication tools, machine shop equipment, or prototype assembly.
- Experience with instrumentation and data acquisition systems, including thermocouples, RTDs, and sensors.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers and cross-functional teams.
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy in data collection and equipment setup.
- Working knowledge of safety practices related to laboratory and industrial environments.

- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift materials or components (up to approximately 25 lbs) as required.
- Ability to perform light fabrication work and operate tools and equipment in a lab or manufacturing environment.
Travel & Working Environment
- Primarily onsite in a lab and manufacturing environment.
- May be exposed to noise, heat, or other industrial conditions depending on testing requirements.
