What Does a Sustainability Manager Do?

A Sustainability Manager is an individual that is responsible for ensuring that organizations set and meet environmental goals. They develop green policies and initiatives that emphasize the proper use of environmental resources with a focus on sustaining these resources for future generations. As a sustainability manager, your duties include the research, development, and implementation of policies that improve the organization’s environmental impact without detracting from other business goals. You are also responsible for ensuring adherence to all laws and industry regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sustainability Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sustainability Manager, you need expertise in environmental science, sustainability strategy, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a relevant degree such as environmental studies or engineering. Familiarity with sustainability reporting frameworks (like GRI or CDP), carbon accounting tools, and certifications such as LEED or ISO 14001 is often required. How does a Sustainability Manager typically collaborate with other departments to drive organizational change?

Sustainability Managers frequently work cross-functionally, partnering with departments such as operations, procurement, HR, and marketing to implement sustainability initiatives. They often lead or participate in interdepartmental committees, facilitate workshops, and communicate sustainability goals to ensure alignment across the organization. This collaboration is essential for integrating sustainable practices into core business processes and for gathering data to track progress. Effective communication and project management skills are key to overcoming challenges and ensuring that sustainability objectives are understood and supported company-wide.
