The opportunity

Sustainability starts at the design table-and this role puts you right at the center of that impact. As the Engineering Design Sustainability Lead, you will shape how sustainability is embedded into global engineering decisions across our transformer business.

This is a highly visible, strategic role where engineering excellence meets environmental responsibility. You will lead the shift from downstream sustainability activities to designled outcomes, ensuring productlevel carbon reduction, material optimization, and environmental performance are built into every design choice from the outset.

You will work across global engineering teams to translate sustainability ambitions into measurable, auditable product outcomes-balancing cost, safety, quality, and performance. With increasing expectations from customers, regulators, and stakeholders for credible productlevel data, your work will directly support compliance, ESG reporting, and longterm business resilience.

If you thrive at the intersection of engineering, data, and sustainability-and enjoy influencing without direct authority-this role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of sustainable product design at scale.

How you'll make an impact
  • Define and drive a global, designled sustainability strategy within Engineering.
  • Embed sustainability into engineering standards, processes, and decision frameworks.
  • Reduce productlevel carbon footprint through smart design, material, and architecture choices.
  • Establish sustainability targets, KPIs, and traceable productlevel data at BOM level.
  • Partner across engineering, R&D, supply chain, digital and operations teams globally.
  • Strengthen governance, reporting, and auditready sustainability metrics.
  • Build capability and foster ownership of sustainable design within engineering teams.
  • Translate regulatory and customer sustainability expectations into engineering requirements.
  • Responsible to ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.
Your background
  • Master's degree or PhD in Engineering or a closely related sustainability discipline.
  • 10+ years of engineering experience, including 5+ years in sustainabilityfocused roles.
  • Proven success delivering designled sustainability or product carbon reduction initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of lifecycle assessment, sustainable materials, and carbon accounting.
  • Experience leading global, crossfunctional initiatives and influencing senior stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical mindset with a datadriven approach to decisionmaking.
More about us
  • At Hitachi Energy, sustainability, innovation, and safety are core to how we design the future of energy.
  • You'll work in a global, diverse environment where ideas are valued and impact is visible.
  • We offer meaningful opportunities to grow, lead, and shape industryleading solutions with purpose.
