The School of Architecture is seeking applications and nominations for the following faculty position: Associate Professor or Full Professor (with tenure) in Architectural Design and Historic Preservation. The position will be available starting July 1, 2027.
Mission of the Michael C. Duda Center for Preservation, Resilience, and Sustainability
The Michael Christopher Duda Center for Preservation, Resilience, and Sustainability was established in 2021 to offer the School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame new and expanded opportunities to advance its mission, especially in the protection and conservation of "our common home," as Pope Francis wrote in Laudato Si'.
The Center provides essential resources to support the Master of Science in Historic Preservation.
(MSHP) program and all undergraduate coursework focused on historic environments. Complementing its teaching mission, the Center sponsors multidisciplinary research that explores how tangible and intangible heritage can inform sustainable architectural and urban development. The program also aims to expand and strengthen its international network of allies and collaborators who share the Center's mission and vision.
The School will consider outstanding candidates at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (with tenure) to teach upper-level architectural design studio courses and those related to historic preservation. In addition to teaching design studios, candidates should have a strong administrative background as it relates to managing a program of study in Historic Preservation, Resilience, and Sustainability. The position also includes serving as the Director of the Michael Christopher Duda Center for Preservation, Resilience, and Sustainability. Faculty with tenure and demonstrated administrative capability, especially with academic affairs or service to institutions like the ACSA, NAAB, or AIA, are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:

• Lead and support the vision of the Michael Christopher Duda Center, including fundraising and promotion of the program.
• Teach a combination of upper-level undergraduate or graduate design studio courses and/or core architecture curriculum in both the fall and spring semesters, especially those related to historic preservation and sustainability
• Maintain an active scholarly research, practice, or creative work trajectory
• Participation in meetings, committees, reviews, presentations, and other service activities throughout the academic year, both within the School of Architecture and the University.

Qualifications
Required:
Required: Entry-level applicants must have a terminal degree (B.Arch or M.Arch) and a Master's or PhD in conservation, preservation, or architectural history (or related field) expected by the time of appointment. Advanced level applicants must have a terminal degree (B.Arch or M.Arch) and a Master's or PhD in conservation, preservation, or architectural history (or related field). Both entry- and advanced-level applicants must have a record of excellence in research and professional practice/creative work, and a commitment to teaching excellence. Senior tenured-level applicants must have documented excellence in research and teaching and an emerging national reputation.
The School of Architecture (SoA) is distinguished by its emphasis on hand drawing in educating future architects; as such, candidates should align with the School's core pedagogy. Furthermore, the successful candidate should demonstrate expertise in three or more of the following key focus areas:

• Documentation, preservation, restoration, and adaptive reuse of historic heritage based on international charters and guidelines;
• Traditional and digital heritage documentation and analysis of layered historic structures;

• The recovery of historic building cultures, traditional trades, and crafts;
• Material analysis and experimental testing of heritage-based building technologies;
• Policy and building code reform designed to facilitate the use of historic building practices in contemporary architecture;

• Sustainable urban planning and land-use strategies that integrate the protection of cultural and natural resources.
