What does a surveyor do and how can I become one with no experience?

A surveyor measures and maps land, property boundaries, and construction sites using specialized equipment and technology. If you have no experience, you can start by pursuing a relevant qualification such as a diploma or degree in surveying, civil engineering, or geomatics. Some entry-level positions may offer on-the-job training or apprenticeships, allowing you to learn while you work. Gaining skills in math, geography, and using computer-aided design (CAD) software can also be helpful. Networking with professionals and joining industry organizations can improve your job prospects in surveying.

What kind of on-the-job training and support can I expect as a surveyor with no prior experience?

As a Surveyor starting with no prior experience, you can typically expect structured on-the-job training that includes shadowing experienced surveyors, learning to operate surveying equipment, and gaining familiarity with field procedures and safety protocols. Many entry-level positions offer mentorship, hands-on practice, and gradual responsibility increases, allowing you to build foundational skills in data collection, measurement techniques, and site documentation. Team collaboration is common, as you'll often work alongside engineers, project managers, and other surveyors, which provides a supportive environment for learning and professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a surveyor with no experience, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Surveyor with no experience, you need a foundational understanding of mathematics, spatial awareness, and attention to detail, often supported by a relevant diploma or coursework in surveying or civil engineering. Familiarity with basic surveying tools, GIS software, and CAD systems is beneficial, and some employers may require entry-level certifications like CST Level I. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and a willingness to learn are valuable soft skills in this entry-level role.
