What is a surrogate?

A surrogate is a person who carries and delivers a baby for someone else, known as the intended parents. This process is typically done through gestational surrogacy, where the surrogate has no genetic relation to the baby. Surrogates undergo medical and legal procedures to ensure a safe pregnancy and protect all parties involved. They provide an invaluable service to individuals or couples who cannot carry a child on their own.

What does a typical surrogacy journey look like for a surrogate?

A typical surrogacy journey begins with detailed screenings, followed by matching with intended parents and signing legal agreements to ensure everyone’s rights are protected. From there, Surrogates usually undergo medical procedures to prepare for embryo transfer and then attend regular medical appointments throughout the pregnancy. Communication is ongoing with both the intended parents and agency coordinators to keep everyone informed and supported. Surrogates are often part of a network of fellow surrogates and support staff, providing guidance and camaraderie throughout the process. The journey is structured but also highly collaborative, with consistent support available at each step.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the surrogate position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Surrogate, you need excellent physical health, a strong understanding of the surrogacy process, and often prior childbirth experience. While most surrogacy agencies require medical screenings and background checks, some may also provide training on legal, medical, and psychological topics related to surrogacy. Compassion, clear communication, and emotional resilience are standout soft skills for supporting intended parents and managing the journey. These abilities are critical to ensure a positive surrogacy experience, foster trust, and maintain the health and wellbeing of all parties involved.

Is it hard to qualify to be a surrogate?

Qualifying to be a surrogate involves meeting specific health, age, and lifestyle criteria, such as being between 21 and 40 years old, having a healthy pregnancy history, and passing medical and psychological evaluations. Candidates must also have a stable living situation and no significant health issues. The process can be competitive, and requirements vary by agency or clinic, but generally, meeting these standards is essential to qualify as a surrogate.

Is there a high demand for surrogates?

The demand for surrogates is generally high due to increasing numbers of individuals and couples seeking assisted reproductive options. Surrogacy agencies and fertility clinics often report a steady need for qualified surrogates, especially in regions with supportive legal frameworks and medical facilities. However, demand can vary based on legal, ethical, and regional factors.

Job description

Role: Automotive Propulsion Software Research Engineer
Location: Fully onsite. Warren, MI
Contract role
Job description:
Develop an LLM and agent based assistant to automate simulation setup, run deck generation, boundary condition/mesh recommendations, results review, and requirements alignment across 1D/3D tools (e.g., GT POWER/Simcenter Amesim, ANSYS/STAR CCM+, MATLAB/Simulink).
Surrogate Modeling & Automated Design Space Exploration (DSE): Build physics informed ML surrogates for key propulsion performance metrics (e.g., torque, BSFC/efficiency, thermal limits, emissions proxies, e drive efficiency maps) and integrate them with active learning data generation and multi objective optimization
MS or PHD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering
Skillset: Python programming (critical); Experience in AI/ML, preferably Generative AI (critical); familiarity with embedded software development lifecycle and systems engineering activities
• System architecture covering data sources (requirements, prior studies, PLM), tools (1D/3D solvers), and results storage (Lakehouse).
• Document parsing pipelines for requirements/specs/test plans; establish content normalization (Markdown/JSON).
• Agent workflows for: interpreting change requests, proposing simulation plans, generating run decks/templates, mesh/BC suggestions, and automated post processing.
• Chat + form based UI to request studies, generate inputs, and review outputs.
• Integration with Databricks (Lakehouse, MLflow, Model Serving) for versioning, observability, and scalable compute.
• Define target responses (e.g., torque map, efficiency map, pressure ratios, temperatures, emissions proxies), inputs (geometry/controls/operating points), and constraints.
• Data model and schema for simulation inputs/outputs; provenance and UQ metadata.
• Orchestrate solver sweeps (1D/CFD/FEA where applicable) to seed the dataset.
• Implement adaptive sampling/active learning to target high value points that reduce model error.
• Train candidate surrogates (e.g., GPR, XGBoost/TabNet, feedforward NNs, physics informed NNs).
• Cross validation, error budgets, calibration; uncertainty quantification and guardbanding.
• Integrate surrogates with DSE (e.g., Bayesian Optimization, NSGA II) to target objectives (efficiency/BSFC, mass, cost, thermal margins) under constraints (emissions/temperature/packaging).
• Optional coupling to MDAO toolchains (e.g., ModelCenter/HEEDS/Simcenter).
