The Program Director must be responsible for supervising all aspects of the Surgical Technology program, including the organization, administration, continuous review, planning, compliance, development, implementation, and general effectiveness of the program, including instructor supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintains programmatic accreditation.
  • Interviews and screens instructor applicants.
  • Evaluates instructor performance through class observations, student feedback, meetings, and individual counseling.
  • Attends and represents the Surgical Technology department at local, state, and national meetings sponsored by the Association of Surgical Technologists (ASTโ„ข).
  • Creates, revises, and modifies curricula in alignment with the current edition of the AST Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology.
  • Conducts orientation for newly hired instructors.
  • Conducts orientation to new students and staff both to the department and the College.
  • Assists instructors in student scheduling.
  • Conducts staff meetings.
  • Advises students upon recommendation of their instructors.
  • Supervises quality assurance of the programs by both internal/external tools (e.g. surveys).
  • Reviews, recommends, and implements selection of textbooks, instructional aids, instructional resources and equipment.
  • Interfaces regularly with other departments, especially Admissions, Financial Aid, Placement, and the Registrar.
  • Conducts and directs in-house instructors meetings.
  • Ensures that monthly student progress reports are completed by instructors in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that the department staff adheres to policy and procedure.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
  • Possesses a thorough knowledge of the specific program requirements, accreditation, and approval standards.
  • Ability to provide flexible leadership, coaching and development to faculty members who have a variety of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching and working with adult learners.
  • Demonstrated Computer literacy skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty, and the public. Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population of experiences, personal attributes and backgrounds.
  • Possesses clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Must demonstrate ability to teach from a standardized curriculum.
  • Knowledge of career opportunities and the expectations of the industry or profession for entry level employees' skills and experience.
  • Must be flexible to meet schedules that include evening and possible weekend hours.

LAB INSTRUCTION:
The instructor will oversee and facilitate laboratory sessions for students in the lab. This role involves providing hands-on instruction, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and fostering a supportive learning environment that encourages student engagement and inquiry.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Must possess a credential in the field of Surgical Technology through a national credentialing organization that is accredited by the through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
  • Must have a minimum of three years of current operating room experience in the scrub role and/or three years of current experience as an instructor in Surgical Technology.
