Description:

A.T. Still University's Missouri School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-MOSDOH) seeks an exempt Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Intern at the St. Louis Dental Center. This position reports to the Director – SCU of OMFS and Vice Dean, Clinical Operations, Clinical Education & Community Partnerships. The OMFS Intern is responsible for performing various types of oral surgical procedures on patients under the supervision of OMFS faculty at MOSDOH (1500 Park), assuring high quality oral surgery services to patients of OMFS and its rotating specialties including urgent dental care and comprehensive dentistry, and teaching and guiding pre-doctoral (DMD) with the fundamental of Oral Surgery rotating in SCU of OMFS. This is a paid internship.

Requirements:

Major Job Duties

  • Surgical consults, diagnosis, treatment planning, individually performing an array of surgical procedures with direct supervision of OMFS faculty members
  • Surgical workup, treatment alternative critical discussion with faculty and patients, first assistant with the faculty members of OMFS
  • Interact with dental students in performing outpatient procedures on a daily basis
  • Interact with residents of other specialties (Periodontics, Endodontics, Orthodontics, Implant Surgery) for collaborative treatment.
  • Interact and assist general dental faculty members' patients during urgent or emergent surgical needs
  • Attend medical emergency situations on the clinic floor as needed
  • Assist and attend all sedation-based OMFS cases
  • Participate in the weekly OMFS-evidence-based dentistry presentation by pre-doctoral students
  • Present elaborate and complex OMFS topics and Journal club at the OMFS club
  • Participate at the Saint Louis University- grand rounds when needed
  • Participate in advanced skill lab (suturing, manikin-based skill assessment)
  • Attend OMFS faculty lecture/ presentation series to Interns & students (as schedule permits)
  • Rotate with external surgical and specialty clinics with Dept of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Otolaryngology, and Anesthesiology in affiliated Hospitals and Universities
  • Rotate with the internal specialty care unit of oral implantology
  • Prepare and present a poster or oral presentation in a State or National level professional meeting
  • Associate with existing research projects in the SCU of OMFS
  • Potential for intermittent on-call and other outreach activities after-hours
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills/Requirements

  • D.D.S, D.M.D, or B.D.S degree
  • Must have knowledge of general dentistry
  • Must have successfully completed D.D.S/ D.M.D from a CODA-approved US Dental School
  • Sufficient experience gained during Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery rotation during DDS/DMD Program
  • Two professional recommendation letters - one letter must be from OMFS faculty from their Dental School/ College
  • Unrestricted full Dental license issued by Missouri Board of Dentistry
  • Current BLS, ACLS & PALS certification
  • Personal Malpractice insurance for practice outside ATSU-affiliated institutions
  • Must be articulate
  • Must be able to receive clear orders/ instruction from faculty members
  • Must be able to express independent organizational skills
  • Interested in pursuing a career in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Polite
  • Articulate and clear communication skills
  • Adaptable, adjustable, and highly motivated
  • Confidence to work independently but remain supervised
  • Know the limitations and seek out assistance

  • This is a paid internship.
