Surface Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Surface Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Surface Engineer, you need a strong background in materials science, surface chemistry, and engineering principles, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with analytical tools such as scanning electron microscopes (SEM), atomic force microscopes (AFM), and surface characterization software is important, along with certifications in materials analysis or relevant quality standards. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and addressing technical challenges. These competencies are crucial for developing advanced surface solutions, ensuring product quality, and driving innovation in various industries.

What are some typical challenges Surface Engineers face when working on materials for high-performance applications?

Surface Engineers often encounter challenges related to optimizing surface properties such as hardness, corrosion resistance, and wear without compromising the material's overall integrity. Balancing cost-effective solutions with advanced surface treatments can also be demanding, especially when working under tight project deadlines. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including materials scientists, mechanical engineers, and manufacturing specialists—is essential to ensure that surface modifications align with broader product requirements and quality standards.

What are surface engineers?

Surface engineers are professionals who specialize in modifying and optimizing the surfaces of materials to enhance their performance, durability, and functionality. They work with coatings, treatments, and advanced materials to protect surfaces from corrosion, wear, or environmental damage. Surface engineers play a key role in industries such as aerospace, automotive, electronics, and energy by improving the lifespan and efficiency of components. Their work often involves research, testing, and the application of new technologies to solve complex surface-related challenges.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A surface engineer typically requires specialized training and experience, and earning $10,000 a month without a degree is uncommon in this field. High-paying roles in industries like sales, real estate, or entrepreneurship often do not require formal degrees but depend on skills, performance, and market conditions. Most well-paying technical or engineering roles generally require relevant education or certifications.

What is the difference between Surface Engineer vs Coatings Engineer?

AspectSurface EngineerCoatings Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields; certifications like NACE or SSPCBachelor's in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science; similar certifications in coatings and corrosion
Work EnvironmentIndustrial facilities, manufacturing plants, research labsCoating application sites, manufacturing, quality control labs
Industry UsageOil & gas, aerospace, automotive, manufacturingProtective coatings, paints, corrosion prevention in similar industries

Surface Engineers focus on the overall surface treatment and material properties, while Coatings Engineers specialize in applying and developing protective coatings. Both roles often overlap in industries like aerospace and manufacturing, sharing similar credentials and work environments.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Surface Grinder to join our skilled machining team. This role is ideal for a hands-on machinist who takes pride in precision work, blueprint accuracy, and continuous improvement. You will be responsible for setting up and operating manual surface grinding equipment, inspecting complex parts, and contributing to high-quality manufacturing outcomes in a safety-focused environment.
What You Will Do

  • Inspect parts prior to grinding to identify chips, cracks, or defects
  • Set up and operate manual surface grinding equipment to tight tolerances
  • Verify workpiece dimensions against blueprints and specifications
  • Inspect parts received from other departments for accuracy and quality
  • Review blueprints and identify inconsistencies or potential issues
  • Fixture parts and develop manufacturing methods for complex components
  • Diagnose and correct equipment or process issues using prior experience and test tools
  • Provide input on process improvements and operational efficiencies
  • Accurately record job times and production data

What You Need to Have
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (preferred)
  • Completion of a 2½-year Surface Grinding Apprenticeship or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Strong ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints
  • Working knowledge of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form
  • U.S. Citizenship or ability to comply with U.S. export regulations
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without current or future employer sponsorship.

Physical & Work Requirements
  • Ability to work on-site (remote work not available)
  • Stand, sit, bend, or kneel for up to 10 hours per day
  • Lift up to 35 pounds unassisted with control
  • Reach above shoulder level and maintain hand dexterity for extended periods
  • Use hands to handle tools, controls, and precision components
  • Wear required PPE including safety glasses, ear protection, and safety shoes
  • Perform all essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation

Why You’ll Like This Role
  • Hands-on, high-skill manual machining — not button-pushing
  • Work on complex, precision parts that require problem-solving
  • Stable, on-site role in a professional machining environment
  • Opportunity to influence process improvements and best practices
  • Be valued for your experience, craftsmanship, and technical skill

BENEFITS TO WORKING AT OBERG:
  • Competitive Pay
  • Overtime Pay (after 8 hours per day worked)
  • 20% Shift differential
  • Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance (no premiums paid)
  • Medical benefit opt-out with Reimbursement option.
  • Health Savings Account (HSA)
  • Short- & Long-Term Disability (company paid, no contribution)
  • Death Benefit
  • 401K Retirement Plan (with 4% employer match)
  • 401K Oberg Profit Sharing Contribution
  • Quarterly Bonus Program (based on company performance)
  • Paid Time Off (earning up to 5 weeks)
  • 9 Paid Holidays
  • Temperature-Controlled Work Environment
