Main Purpose and Major Challenges of the Role

At Outerknown, Firewire Surfboards, and Slater Designs, we believe the best brands contribute to and create culture. 


We’re looking for a copywriter who can help shape the voice of these three purpose-driven brands that sit at the intersection of surf culture, sustainability, design and craftsmanship.


The role isn’t only about writing headlines and product descriptions. It’s about creating stories that inspire someone to paddle out, travel lighter, buy better and become part of something bigger. 


Working alongside our Creative Director, graphic designers and marketing team, you’ll help define how our brands speak across every touchpoint- Outerknown.com, Firewiresurfboards.com, email marketing, paid ads, TV, catalogs/mailers and in-store POP. These experiences will use engaging storytelling, and/or inspire the consumer.

You will play a key role in orchestrating the voice for Outerknown, Firewire Surfboards and Slater Designs. You are passionate about writing, dedicated to quality, and have a creative mindset.


This role is in office a minimum of 4 days a week, subject to change due to business needs. 


ACCOUNTABILITY: 

Shape our voice 

  • Define and refine the tone of voice for Outerknown, Firewire Surfboards and Slater Designs
  • Develop compelling narratives for athletes & ambassadors to help bring them to life
  • Collaborate with creative and marketing teams to ensure content is delivered on time and on brand
  • Ensure every customer touchpoint feels unmistakably on brand – from IG captions to product pages to retail signage
  • Elevate our content across social, email, web, wholesale and retail
  • Support editing content across all brand channels, including: Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Paid Social, Email, Website, Wholesale and Retail Marketing to ensure consistency of voice
  • Support our PR agency with press releases to ensure we’re presenting a unified voice 




ACCOUNTABILITY: 

Tell Stories with Feeling that Sell Stuff

  • You will create work that builds brand affinity while delivering business results
  • You will write – brand campaigns, product launches, email, SMS, paid social, web copy, catalogs and print, retail and environmental, video scripts, performance marketing creative and more
  • This role includes lots of direct response copy for paid ads, emails and SMS that needs to have a personality and bring our consumers along for the journey 
  • Consistently generate fresh ideas solving for the communication objectives of the creative brief
  • Partner with the Creative Team and Marketing team to conceptually think through business problems and develop strategic ideas to solve them through the art of copy
  • Own the review, edit and overall development of content during all phases of your projects
  • Ability to write consistent with the brands style and tone of voice for multiple brands
  • Take a media approach to content and blogs across the 2 sites – thinking creatively to create mixed media content that bring our brands, people and ambassadors to life

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of professional copyrighting experience for consumer brands or agencies
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in both storytelling and performance marketing content
  • Strong understanding of social media platforms and content performance
  • Ability to write both brand storytelling content and conversion-focused performance creative
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Passion for storytelling, outdoor culture, surf, travel, and lifestyle content


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with apparel, outdoor, surf, lifestyle, or consumer brands
  • Familiarity with Asana, Bynder, Figma, Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, and modern content management workflows
