Job description

Title: Lead Field Engineer – Electrical
Location: Travel/Relocation Required - Homer City, PA
Hire Type: Contract to hire
Shift/Hours: Full-Time | Field-Based
Salary: $50/hr -$67/hr (Based on experience)

Sterling Engineering is partnering to hire a Lead Field Engineer with a strong background in mechanical and piping systems. This position will play a critical role in supporting the successful execution of large-scale power generation projects throughout North America. The ideal candidate will provide technical leadership in the field, support safe and efficient construction activities, and coordinate closely with project management, field supervision, subcontractors, and craft personnel to ensure project success.

Job Duties:
  • Serve as the lead field engineering resource for mechanical and piping scopes including pipe racks, pipe supports, pressure piping, equipment installation, and mechanical systems.
  • Interpret and communicate piping drawings, isometrics, P&IDs, specifications, and vendor documentation to field teams.
  • Support constructability reviews and resolve field design issues in coordination with engineering and project teams.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs, progress tracking, installation verification, and field documentation.
  • Assist with development and execution of work plans, work packages, lift plans, and installation sequencing.
  • Coordinate field layout, elevation control, and as-built documentation.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate mechanical work activities with field supervision and union craft personnel.
  • Order, track, and schedule delivery of mechanical materials, valves, supports, piping, and equipment.
  • Support commissioning readiness, mechanical completion activities, punch list resolution, and turnover documentation.
  • Lead field quality inspections and ensure compliance with project specifications and installation requirements.
  • Participate in Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), toolbox talks, safety meetings, and site safety audits.
  • Provide technical support to subcontractors, vendors, and project stakeholders.
  • Assist with RFIs, field clarifications, engineering change documentation, purchase orders, and subcontract administration.
  • Maintain project documentation including daily reports, photos, turnover packages, RFIs, and as-built records.
  • Support cost tracking, forecasting, quantity verification, and change management activities.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum 5+ years of construction field experience with a strong focus on mechanical and piping systems.
  • Experience leading or mentoring field engineers and coordinating with craft supervision.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret piping drawings, isometrics, P&IDs, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Strong understanding of piping materials, supports, mechanical equipment, and installation methods commonly used in power generation projects.
  • Ability to work in active construction environments and travel/relocate as required.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and project execution.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline required.
Software/Technical Skills:
  • Ability to review and interpret engineering drawings, vendor documents, and technical submittals.
  • Experience supporting project scheduling, documentation, cost tracking, and field engineering activities.
  • Familiarity with mechanical systems, piping installations, and power generation construction projects.
