The Program:
As a Tier II child development center, YWCA Mel Wolf is much more than a daycare. Mel Wolf is dedicated to child development, education, and emotional growth. Instructors engage children with high-quality and age-appropriate activities, various educational toys and equipment; a stimulating curriculum custom-tailored to each childโ€™s development and interests; plus nutritious meals and snacks. Services are provided to infants, toddlers, preschool, and school-age children year-round The YWCA Mel Wolf Child Development Center, which is available to anyone regardless of their socio-economic status, offers childcare and education thatโ€™s secure, diverse, and stimulating. Studies show that early childhood development is one of the best economic development tools for states to develop a stronger workforce, lower crime rates, and advance educational opportunities. The services offered at YWCA Mel Wolf are particularly empowering to working mothers, many of whom are the familyโ€™s single source of income.
The Position:
The Summer Teacher at Mel Wolf is a part-time temporary position with the opportunity for continued employment who will work closely with their peers, under the direction of the Lead Teacher. The summer assistant will direct activities in a childcare room and assist in developing programs and activities appropriate for each child's learning and social needs, considering each child's strengths and weaknesses.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalency.
  • One (1) year of relevant work experience.
  • Possess a WV Training Certification/ACDS.

Additional Requisites:
  • Knowledge and ability to meet the requirements of State childcare licensing standards.
  • Visual acuity permits routine assessment of children, observation of child and staff conduct, and the development and use of materials to create a โ€œprint-richโ€ environment that includes daily age-appropriate reading and literature activities.
  • Auditory acuity is sufficient to monitor classroom activity and to engage in meaningful communication with children, parents, and staff.
  • Expressive communication skills to enable clear guidance to children and staff during routine and emergent situations.
  • Must meet health requirements established by State licensing standards.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.

Responsibilities:
  • Implement a curriculum planned by the Summer Camp Coordinator emphasizing age-appropriate activities to help children learn and develop.
  • Provide behavioral intervention, as needed, without recourse to physical or emotional punishment.
  • Develop positive relationships with parents and encourage them to be involved in their childโ€™s care.
  • Follow guidance from the Lead Teacher to ensure that State childcare licensing standards are met, including standards related to health and safety.
  • Maintain a schedule and structure in the room that promotes positive interactions with children, guides and directs their behavior, and reduces or eliminates the need for reactive behavior intervention.
  • Other duties as assigned.
