The goal is to enhance the essay's effectiveness and alignment with college admission requirements.

What are the typical challenges faced by college essay editors, and how can these be managed?

College essay editors often encounter challenges such as helping students articulate personal experiences authentically, managing tight deadlines during application seasons, and ensuring feedback supports rather than overrides the applicant's voice. Editors can manage these by fostering clear communication, setting realistic timelines, and focusing feedback on clarity and structure rather than content rewriting. Collaboration with students, parents, and sometimes guidance counselors is common, requiring strong interpersonal skills. Successfully navigating these challenges allows editors to help students present their strongest possible applications while maintaining academic integrity.

Outstanding interpersonal communication, patience, and the ability to give constructive feedback help editors guide students effectively. These capabilities empower editors to enhance student essays while respecting each student's unique voice and meeting rigorous college application requirements.

Do you love working with teens and young adults? Do you love writing and helping people tell their stories? Are you interested in helping a diverse array of students navigate the college application process? If so, come work as a College Essay Coach & Editor for HelloCollege!
HelloCollege is a fast-growing college admissions counseling service with a national and international clientele that is currently hiring Seasonal / Part-Time Essay Coaches for the current college application season.

Our goal is to help students get into their top-choice college, reduce the costs of college, and graduate on time with a job in their major. Our role is to reduce the stress of students and parents by properly preparing and guiding students through college planning. For additional information about us, please visit https://sayhellocollege.com/.
Core responsibilities include:

  • Meeting with students and families to identify successful topics for college essays and providing customers with confident guidance through the college essay process
  • Editing essays in a timely manner to improve their content, organization, and mechanics
  • Helping students plan their college essay writing process and meet application deadlines

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Periodic internal meetings with teammates and supervisor
  • Documenting all student interactions and editing
  • Providing your own remote work equipment, including a laptop with reliable internet access, and a professional video background

Successful applicants will possess:

  • A Bachelors degree or better
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including immaculate grammar
  • Experience working as a writing instructor, editor, or professional writer, ideally with a background in creative writing or journalism
  • Experience working with high school- or college-aged students
  • Self-direction and the ability to meet strict deadlines in a remote work environment
  • Familiarity with Google Docs and the ability to learn new software platforms

Additional consideration will be given to candidates with experience:

  • Working in education, especially admissions or counseling
  • Personal coaching
  • Video editing

Though the schedule is highly flexible, strict availability requirements include the ability to work:

  • 1030 hours per week, possibly more in September and especially October
  • A largely seasonal schedule, running primarily from June through October, though with some additional availability during May, November, and December
  • At least three weekday evenings and one weekend day per week during the school year (August through October)
  • Seasonally, with no expectation of hours from January through May

Pay: $30$50 per hour

To apply, please send a brief (12 page) writing sample to cbench@sayhellocollege.com. Excerpts from longer compositions are fine; more creative, casual, or personal samples are preferred.(I see too many Master's theses on Hegel's metaethics and earnings reports for the Latin American sales division, neither of which speak terribly well to candidates' facility with personal essays. I'd much rather read a memoir of your late grandmother's seashell collection or your Letterboxd review of Bugonia.)

Only applicants who email a writing sample tocbench@sayhellocollege.com
will be considered.
