Job description

Title: Boys Head Cross Country Coach

Location: Greenville High School

Classification: Athletic Coach

Reports to: Director of Athletics

Schedule: Seasonal

Salary: $2,324 - $5,113 per season, based upon relevant prior experience

Benefits: This position does not meet the requirements for benefit eligibility


POSITION SUMMARY: The Boys Head Cross Country Coach is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the high school boys cross country program, including developing student athlete endurance, technique, and competitive performance while promoting academic success, sportsmanship, and a positive team culture.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: other duties may be assigned

  • Plan, organize, and lead all practices, meets, and team activities
  • Develop season training plans focused on endurance, strength, and injury prevention
  • Instruct athletes in proper running techniques, pacing, and race strategy
  • Supervise student athletes during practices, competitions, and travel
  • Monitor and support academic progress of team members
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and disciplined team environment
  • Ensure compliance with school, district, conference, and state athletic association rules
  • Coordinate meet schedules, transportation, and event logistics
  • Maintain accurate records (rosters, times, stats, and awards)
  • Oversee equipment distribution, care, and inventory
  • Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, staff, and administration
  • Organize and promote off-season conditioning and summer running programs
  • Collaborate with other coaches and athletic staff to support overall program success
  • Participate in fundraising and community engagement efforts as needed
  • Commitment to regular and predictable attendance

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Previous coaching experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of distance running training principles and race strategy
  • Ability to motivate and develop student athletes of all ability levels
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Commitment to the safety, academic success, and well-being of student athletes
  • Satisfactory background check

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

The employee must be able to:

  • Stand, walk, and move across varied terrain for extended periods of time
  • Sit for extended periods on buses for away meets and tournaments
  • Perform and demonstrate drills, pacing, and technique
  • Maintain awareness and supervision of student athletes across large outdoor areas
  • Lift and move training gear and other equipment (typically up to 25-50 lbs)
  • Work outdoors in a wide range of weather conditions including heat, cold, and rain
  • Project voice loudly and clearly in noisy environments
  • Maintain composure under stress
