JOB SUMMARY

Paddock Crew team members are responsible for maintaining and preparing the saddling paddock and surrounding racing facilities to support safe, efficient live racing operations and deliver a world-class racing experience for guests. This is a seasonal position for the Summer race meet at Colonial Downs.

Compensation: $17.25 per hour

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs general maintenance and upkeep of the saddling paddock, winner’s circle, track, barn areas, and surrounding facilities.
  • Maintenance duties may include raking, mowing, stall mucking, string trimming, weed removal, garbage removal, and general area beautification.
  • Ensures ice, water, and hoses are available and properly staged throughout live racing hours.
  • Assists with set-up and breakdown of paddock areas in support of live racing operations.
  • Remains calm and professional while working around multiple horses and people in confined areas.
  • Provides professional and courteous service to internal and external guests, demonstrating Company service standards at all times.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information in accordance with Company policies and state regulations.
  • Adheres to all safety procedures, Company policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Resolves issues within the scope of authority and escalates matters beyond that scope to the supervisor.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of relevant activities, concerns, or safety issues.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to follow instructions precisely, particularly in safety-sensitive situations.
  • Ability to work calmly and effectively around horses in a fast-paced environment.
  • Basic maintenance, groundskeeping, or housekeeping skills.
  • Strong situational awareness and attention to safety.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Availability to work the entire race meet at Colonial Downs (June 25th through September 7th) strongly preferred.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Prior maintenance, groundskeeping, or housekeeping experience preferred.
  • Experience working with or around horses highly preferred.
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Virginia Racing Commission license.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a minimum of three (3) years driving experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
  • The Team Member will be required to stand and walk for the duration of the shift.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the Team Member is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, reach, handle, or feel objects, tools, equipment, or animals; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • The Team Member may be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • The Team Member may be required to work long hours, including early mornings, nights, weekends, holidays, and all live race days.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor conditions, exposure to varying weather, animals, and crowds associated with live racing operations.
