CUSTODIAN LEVEL I
Purpose Statement
The job of Custodian was established for the purpose/s of providing custodial services at assigned site(s); ensuring an attractive, sanitary and safe environment for students, staff and visitors; performing a variety of special cleaning operations; and assisting in preparing facilities for classroom activities and campus events.
JOB DESCRIPTION
This job reports to (On-Site School Principal/Lead Custodian)
Essential Functions
Keeps buildings and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
Checks daily to ensure that all custodial and mechanical rooms are kept locked at all times.
Sweeps classrooms daily and dust furniture
Cleans corridors after school each day, and during the day when their condition requires it.
Scrubs, hose down, and disinfects toilets, urinals, floors daily, and clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
Washes all windows, glass on both the inside and outside at least twice a year, and more frequently if necessary. *
Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.
Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition.
Cleans all dry erase boards at least once a week. (Get with the room teacher or assigned person to set a schedule up). *
Reports major repairs as needed to the lead custodian.
Reports immediately to the principal any damage to school property.
Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment, etc., and requisitions such needed replacements from the lead custodian far enough in advance so they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian in his/her duties. *
Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal.
Complies with local, state, federal laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, chemicals and waste.
Cross trains on all equipment (floor scrubbers, floor buffers, etc.) used by the custodial department to become proficient in their use.
Attends meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions. Cleans assigned facilities and/or grounds (e.g. classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, cafeteria, multipurpose rooms, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
Performs summer maintenance (e.g. strip/wax floors, moves furniture, painting, etc.) for the purpose of completing and/or facilitating summer construction.
Prepares site for daily operations (e.g. opening gates, raising flags, sweeping walkway, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring facilities are operational and hazard free.
Replenishes classroom and restroom supplies (e.g. paper towels, soap, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring adequate quantities for daily use.
Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, vandalism, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action or notifying appropriate personnel for resolution.
Responds to inquiries from staff, students, parents, and/or visitors for the purpose of providing information, taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
Secures facilities and grounds (e.g. doors, gates, alarms, lights, etc.) for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss and/or potential liability.
Supports District maintenance staff (e.g. grounds, trades, general maintenance, etc.) for the purpose of completing site custodial activities.
Any other duties that may be assigned from time to time by the principal/lead custodian.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in, power hand tools, battery-type machines, etc.; adhering to safety practices; handling hazardous materials; and planning and managing projects.
KNOWLEDGE is required to understand and read English from a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: standard methods, materials and tools used in assigned skilled trade; and safety practices and procedures. ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; developing effective working relationships; displaying mechanical aptitude; working under time constraints; and complying with OSHA/TOSHA regulations.

Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment.
