Job description

Summer Camp Counselors at the Whitewater Center are responsible for providing camper supervision and coordinating group processes while facilitating camp programming in a safe and enjoyable manner. Summer Camp Counselor positions require full-time availability (minimum 4 days a week) during summer weekdays corresponding with camp sessions. Camp Counselors are on-site and report to the Outdoor School Supervisor.

The 2026 Summer Camp program year runs from June 1st through August 21st. Potential Counselors should be available through the end of August.

Additional camp counselor opportunities are available during the school year on select teacher workdays to applicable employees.

Responsibilities

  • Create a safe, positive, energetic, and enjoyable environment for campers.
  • Supervise campers during pass activities and facilitate games at the center. Campers have access to activities such as whitewater rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking. Zip lining, ropes courses, flatwater paddling, specialized instruction, field games, crafts, and more.
  • Actively guide campers during mountain biking, flatwater paddling, and ropes courses.
  • Assist area guides with gear-up and gear-down processes required for harnessed adventure activities. Follow all safety and operational procedures as dictated by Outdoor School Management.
  • Assist Outdoor School Management in addressing medical and behavioral concerns by completing accurate reports.
  • Communicate and collaborate with Outdoor School Management regarding equipment needs and ideas to improve camp programming.
  • Demonstrate punctuality and character in completing morning duties, greeting campers, and assisting with car line.
  • Take accurate and timely attendance and maintain supervision ratios.
  • Keep clear lines of communication with camp leads and supervisors regarding camper locations, wellbeing, behavior, and program needs.
  • Maintain cleanliness of camp facilities and all guest facing areas and assist campers with locating belongings.
  • Actively assist with dismissal processes.
  • Attend all staff meetings and in-service programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be 17 years of age or older.
  • Attendance at a training session is mandatory. Completion of training, along with demonstrated competency in the required skills, will be considered probationary until confirmed by Outdoor School Management.
  • Previous experience working with youth in a camp or school environment.
  • Highly motivated, energetic, and fun with an outgoing personality.
  • Exhibits an honest and sincere passion for working with kids.
  • Ability to work independently with a group of 10 or more campers.
  • A current First Aid, CPR, & AED Certification โ€“ courses are offered by the Whitewater Center
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and other Whitewater events as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Instruction experience in one or more of the following areas is highly recommended: whitewater kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and/or survival techniques.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to work outdoors for sustained periods of time in all weather and environmental conditions.
  • Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to ride a bike.
  • Must be able to kayak on flatwater.
  • Must be comfortable at height.
  • Must be able to bend, stand, lean, and kneel on a regular basis and for sustained periods of time.
  • Must be able to safely self-transport over uneven terrain or in a confined space.
  • Must be able to work in shared spaces with other employees and customers.
  • All positions as Whitewater require employees to report and work onsite at Whitewater locations.

The Outdoor Activities Department is responsible for leading and supporting experiences in a variety of water and land-based sports. The department also instructs guests through the Whitewater Centerโ€™s Outdoor School and Summer Camps. Outdoor Activities employees engage with guests through an assortment of pass activities and help create memorable outdoor experiences.
