What is a summer consultant?

A Summer Consultant is a temporary or seasonal position, often offered to students or recent graduates by consulting firms during the summer months. These consultants work on real client projects alongside full-time staff, gaining hands-on experience in problem-solving, data analysis, and client communication. The role is designed to provide exposure to the consulting industry, build professional skills, and potentially lead to a full-time job offer after graduation. Summer Consultants typically participate in training, networking events, and mentorship programs throughout their internship.

What types of projects does a summer consultant work on, and how are assignments typically structured?

As a Summer Consultant, you will often be assigned to client-facing projects that address strategic, operational, or organizational challenges. These projects are usually team-based and fast-paced, giving you exposure to a variety of industries and business problems. Assignments are typically structured in short sprints, with clear deliverables and regular check-ins with both your consulting team and client stakeholders. This structure allows you to quickly build problem-solving skills, learn from experienced consultants, and make a tangible impact within a condensed timeframe.

Familiarity with data analysis tools (such as Excel and PowerPoint), management frameworks, and sometimes project management software is common. Outstanding communication, teamwork, and adaptability help Summer Consultants stand out when collaborating with clients and colleagues.
