Job description

Position Description
Performs specialized work in conducting original research. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project.
Major/Essential Functions
  • Amplification of RNA and DNA isolated from a variety of cells and tissues using PCR based methods. Site directed mutagenesis, cloning, and sequencing.
  • Protein isolation, purification, identification and quantitation using SDS-PAGE, Western blot, and immunoprecipitation analysis.
  • Perform digital imaging of cells and tissues using microscopes, including confocal microscope.
  • Breeding of animals for desired genotypes and genotyping of mice using PCR and Western blotting. Maintenance of up-to-date records of mice databases with genotypes and animal husbandry.
  • Analysis of expression genes using Real-Time PCR analysis.
  • Collects, records, maintains, interprets, and prepares data for presentation.
  • Biochemical assays and methods, including kinase assay, ELISA, RIA, western blot, and immunoprecipitation analysis, etc.
  • Preparation and culture of cells and tissue for histological, immunofluorescence, and immunocytochemical analysis.
  • Ensure the day-to-day maintenance of the lab and lab equipment, including compliance with good laboratory practices, ordering supplies, and verifying receipt in the appropriate university systems.
  • Assist with data analysis, manuscript preparation, and presentation of data at lab meetings, as well as at regional and national meetings.
  • Assist with the training of graduate students, summer research interns, medical students, and lab research volunteers.
  • Remains current with all licensure, certifications and mandatory compliances and trainings required of this position.
  • Adhere to all policies, procedures and practices (Regents Rules, TTUS, HSECEP OPs, etc.).
  • Personally, and consistently, demonstrate, display and act in accordance with Texas Tech Health El Paso's Values (Service, Respect, Accountability, Integrity, Advancement, and Teamwork). Serve as a Value's leader while actively promoting and encouraging staff across the institution.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences and at least 1 year of laboratory experience working with mouse models, cell culture and Western blotting.
  • Master's degree or specialized academic training beyond bachelor's level in a particular field of science or engineering preferred.
  • Must demonstrate strong analytical skills, ability to maintain complex and accurate records, exercise independent judgment, and multi-task.
  • Proficient computer skills (MS Office Suite) and strong communication skills.
  • Knowledge of biomedical research techniques, ability to perform bench experiments, and proficiency of research software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, GraphPad Prism, and statistical analysis tools.
