What Is a Summer Associate Job?

A summer associate job is an intern opportunity in which you can gain practical experience and learn the skills of your trade. Industries from construction to entertainment offer summer associate jobs, but the legal industry is the most common for summer associate jobs. As a law student, you can find summer associate jobs after your first and second years of law school. Your job duties as a legal summer associate include drafting motions and other legal documents, practicing in mock trials, observing or performing litigation alongside an experienced lawyer in court, and conducting legal research.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Summer Associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Associate, you generally need strong academic credentials, analytical skills, and the ability to conduct thorough research, often supported by progress toward a relevant degree (such as law, business, or finance). Familiarity with industry-specific tools—like legal research databases, financial modeling software, or project management platforms—is typically expected. Exceptional communication, teamwork, and time management skills help candidates stand out in this role. These competencies are essential for delivering high-quality work, adapting quickly to new challenges, and contributing effectively during a short-term, intensive program.

What can I expect in terms of mentorship and feedback as a Summer Associate?

As a Summer Associate, you will typically be paired with a mentor or supervisor who will guide you through projects and help you acclimate to the firm's culture. Regular feedback sessions are common, both informally during daily work and formally through mid-summer and end-of-program reviews. You'll have opportunities to collaborate with various team members, attend training sessions, and participate in networking events designed specifically for associates. This supportive environment is intended to help you develop professional skills and gain insight into potential career paths within the organization.

What are Summer Associates?

Summer Associates are typically law or business students who work at a law firm, investment bank, or consulting firm during the summer break. This position is usually designed as an internship for students to gain practical experience, learn about the firm’s culture, and potentially secure a full-time job offer after graduation. Summer Associates often participate in real client work, networking events, and training sessions. The role provides valuable insight into the industry and helps students build professional connections.

Job description

About

Bondurant Mixson and Elmore, LLP is a 36-lawyer firm in midtown Atlanta focused on representing plaintiffs and defendants in high-stakes business disputes. Chambers & Partners lists Bondurant as one of only three firms with the highest ranking for commercial litigation in Georgia, and the National Law Journal has recognized the firm as one of the top 10 litigation boutiques in the United States.

Bondurant is seeking exceptional candidates who are interested in commercial trial and appellate litigation and who have a sincere desire to practice law in Atlanta long-term. Successful candidates will have a record of outstanding academic achievement and experience, demonstrating potential to excel in the legal profession and contribute to the firm's success.

Our summer associates receive hands-on training and assignments for substantive, meaningful work similar to that performed by associates. Summer associates typically assist with drafting pleadings and briefs, client conferences, depositions, and hearings during their time at the firm. Our goal is to provide a realistic sense of practice at our firm.

Our summer program is designed to expose students not only to our practice but also to our lawyers and the city of Atlanta. To that end, we invite summer associates to participate in a variety of recreational and social activities, ranging from lunches and dinners at the city's best restaurants to concerts, sporting events, and other activities.

Requirements

Top 10% of class. Law journal and/or moot court preferred. Interest in pursuing a federal clerkship after graduation preferred.
