Job description

Job Description

Engineering Innovation, Inc. (EII) based in Lafayette, Indiana (just 20 minutes away from Purdue University) has been a premier provider of postal automation since 2006. EII is a small but growing dynamic company looking for highly motivated individuals to join its engineering team. The engineering team is responsible for the design, construction, testing, maintenance, and documentation of world-class postal automation equipment as well as assisting in defining the overall product direction.
We are currently seeking an Associate QA / Software Engineer, which is a part-time position for an engineering student or recent graduate. This position will be a hands-on engineering internship where you will design, build, test, and learn—while working alongside experienced engineers on real products and real problems. This position is great for someone that has a little bit of experience with both software and hardware and wants to work on improving their coding and testing skills.
We at Engineering Innovation strive to ensure that our relationship with our students/recent graduates is mutually beneficial and that they walk away from the experience with new-found knowledge and skills they can apply in their careers. We provide individual training for anyone that is hired, so do not hesitate to apply even if you are not 100% qualified. This is a paid (part-time) position.

What You’ll Do

As an Associate QA / Software Engineering Intern, you’ll gain hands-on experience testing, analyzing, and developing the software that drives EII’s equipment and applications. You’ll work closely with experienced engineers to support both quality assurance and software development efforts.

Quality Assurance + Software Testing

  • Write and execute test cases for EII’s equipment and software applications
  • Use virtual machines (VMs) to test across multiple environments
  • Perform functional, regression, and exploratory testing
  • Identify, reproduce, and document software defects
  • Work directly with engineers to verify fixes and improvements

Software Development

  • Develop automated test scripts and tools to improve testing efficiency
  • Build applications that automatically test production software
  • Contribute to internal utilities and workflow improvements
  • Learn modern software development practices and participate in code reviews

Documentation + System Analysis

  • Document procedures, test results, and troubleshooting steps
  • Create diagrams for prototype system setup (network diagrams, wiring diagrams, etc.)
  • Document software and system component interactions (activity diagrams, sequence diagrams, flowcharts)
  • Maintain clear, organized documentation for future engineering reference

What You Bring - We’re looking for a motivated student who enjoys problem‑solving, learning new tools, and contributing to real software projects.

Successful candidates have:

  • Ability to work the following:
    • During the Spring/Fall Semesters: a minimum of 20 hours/week (Monday – Friday, no nights or weekends)
    • During the Summer: a minimum of 32 hours/week (Monday – Friday, no nights or weekends)
  • Programming experience with one or more of the following: Python, C, C#, or C++
  • Experience with Windows and/or Linux (especially Debian‑based systems)
  • Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills
  • Clear communication and attention to detail
  • Curiosity, willingness to learn, and comfort working in a team environment

Bonus Skills (Not Required!) - Experience in any of the following is helpful, but not required—we’ll teach you what you don’t know:

  • Microsoft SQL Server or basic SQL
  • Amazon AWS (EC2, S3, basic networking)
  • Atlassian: Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket
  • Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio
  • Web/UI automation: Selenium WebDriver, Playwright, Cypress, Puppeteer, TestComplete
  • API testing: Postman (collections/automation), REST Assured, SoapUI / ReadyAPI
