Description

Our Head Start programs accept applications for Substitute Teacher Assistants year-round. As Substitute Teacher Assistant, you will support the classroom Teacher by assisting with daily scheduled activities in the absence or support of regular staff. You will help maintain a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for children by:

  • Responding to requests to fill in for classroom openings as availability allows, helping to ensure consistent classroom coverage and support,
  • Supervising children in all program related activities, and
  • Assisting center staff in observation and documentation of the children's development and behavior in order to ensure planning is individualized.

Westmoreland Community Action is a non-profit organization that works to connect individuals and families to opportunities and resources throughout the community to improve their quality of life and help to reduce poverty in the community. This is accomplished through housing, counseling, support, education, intervention, collaborations, partnerships, information, referrals, and networking.


Head Start serves children, ages 3-5, and their families in both center and home-based program options. This program provides pre-Kindergarten learning experiences for young children to help prepare them for a smooth transition into Kindergarten. The overall goal is to promote school readiness.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency required.
  • Familiarity or involvement with the Head Start Program preferred.
  • Initial health examination and Tuberculosis test prior to start.
  • Acts 33, 34, 114, and sex offender registry clearances.

Hourly Rate Based on Years of Experience: $16.48 - $18.04.

REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY TO SAFELY PERFORM THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION OF SUBSTITUTE TEACHER ASSISTANT:

Physical requirements - Push/pull, lift/move up to 50 pounds.

Manual dexterity - Perform moderately difficult manipulation - typing, filing, and writing.

Coordination - Perform tasks, which require foot and/or hand/eye coordination - driving a car, typing data entry.

Mobility - Walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time, drive.

Speech - Articulate with extreme accuracy - employee/client relations, phone contact.

Vision - Read small print, drive a car.

Hearing - Receive verbal instructions, answer phones, intercom, communicate with employees.

Concentration - Able to concentrate on fine detail with some interruption.

Attention span - Able to attend to task function for more than 60 minutes.

Conceptualization - Able to understand and relate to theories behind several related concepts.

Memory - Able to remember multiple verbal and written task-assignments given at beginning of a period extending over long period of time.

Environment Conditions - Indoor/outdoor work.
