Job description

Qualifications:

  • Must hold current New York State teaching certification.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with certification in Special Education, as the building substitute may be called upon to substitute in special education classrooms.


Position Overview:

  • Provides daily coverage for teachers as assigned when the regular teachers are absent from their assignment. The building substitute is anticipated to report every day of student attendance.
  • At the elementary level, the building substitute must be confident teaching a wide range of developmental age groups from Kindergarten through Grade 5.
  • At the secondary level, the building substitute must be confident teaching a wide range of developmental age groups from Grade 6 through Grade 12.
  • The building substitute will not be required to attend on conference days, school breaks or during Regents examinations (Fairport High School).


Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Flexible and willing to adapt to change at short notice
  • Ability to teach day-to-day assignments (less than 30 consecutive school days in any one assignment)
  • Uses initiative to solve problems when they arise and is willing to make decisions based on the best interest of students
  • Experience in curriculum and assessment implementation
  • Recent and relevant professional development
  • Previous teaching experience
  • Ability to communicate well with students
  • Ability to communicate with parents at the direction and/or the consultation of the building administrator, while understanding the approach to communication may vary according to the developmental needs of students within the grade level being taught.
  • A positive attitude. Desire to be part of a close school community and able to contribute in positive ways to the culture of the school.
  • Expertise in building active, collaborative classroom programs which encourage problem solving, critical thinking skills, and which develop a sense of classroom community and trust.
  • A proven ability to differentiate instruction and integrate learning
  • Ability to quickly adjust to different specialist subjects (Art, PE, Music) and grade levels. Can take over classes with little advance notice.


General Subject Responsibilities:

  • The Building Substitute may be required to cover a class each instructional period on some days.
  • The Building Substitute will be entitled to one lunch period every day. There should be no expectation of a planning period.
  • If no coverage is needed for any of the instructional periods, the Building Substitute will assist other classroom teachers to help students with their class assignments, or at the direction of the building principal and/or designee serve as a substitute as a Teacher Aide Substitute or Teaching Assistant Substitute.


General Teaching Responsibilities:

  • The Building Substitute is an integral part of the instructional staff and is expected to assume the same responsibilities as the regular teachers when they are absent. These responsibilities include:
    • Communicating and liaising on a regular basis with other teachers and administrators;
    • Following through with classroom issues such as discipline, expectations and routines;
    • Communicating with other school colleagues in an effort to promote and establish integrative links and/or awareness;
    • Taking an active role in behavioral management;
    • Maintaining up-to-date records of assessment, attendance, planning, reports, and communication with parents, as necessary
    • Perform Ad Hoc duties that are not listed above;
    • Teach in a manner that supports the mission and vision statement of the Fairport Central School District


Compensation:  $165 per day
Direct Supervisor:
Building Principal and/or Assistant Principal of the building assigned to.
