What is a substation wireman?

Substation Wiremen are skilled electrical workers who install, maintain, and repair wiring and electrical equipment within electrical substations. They are responsible for ensuring that all connections, circuit breakers, transformers, and other components operate safely and efficiently. Their work is critical for the reliable delivery of electricity from power plants to homes and businesses. This role requires strong technical knowledge, attention to safety protocols, and the ability to troubleshoot complex electrical systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a substation wireman, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Substation Wireman, you need a solid understanding of electrical theory, blueprint reading, and hands-on experience with substation equipment, often supported by an electrical apprenticeship or vocational training. Familiarity with industry-standard tools, protective relays, SCADA systems, and safety certifications like OSHA are typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring the safe, reliable installation and maintenance of electrical substations, minimizing downtime and hazards.

What are some common challenges faced by substation wiremen during equipment installation and maintenance?

Substation Wiremen often encounter challenges such as working with high-voltage equipment in confined spaces and adhering to strict safety protocols. Troubleshooting complex wiring issues and interpreting detailed electrical schematics can also be demanding. Job description

Job Title: Substation Wireman

Job Description

The Substation Wireman supports substation protection and controls work in both greenfield and brownfield substations at various stages of energization. This role focuses on hands-on control wiring, reading and interpreting schematics and wiring diagrams, and assembling low-voltage wiring systems. It offers a clear career pathway into more technical and higher-paying positions such as pre-commissioning agent or commissioning agent, making it an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to grow in utility distribution and substation design.

Responsibilities

  • Perform hands-on control wiring in substation protection and controls environments, focusing on low-voltage conductors such as #10 AWG and smaller.
  • Read, interpret, and independently follow electrical schematics and wiring diagrams to complete point-to-point wiring and electrical assembly tasks.
  • Work in both greenfield and brownfield substations at various stages of energization, adhering to established safety and quality standards.
  • Install, terminate, and verify control wiring for systems such as HVAC controls, panel shop assemblies, fire alarm systems, PLC controls, and solar and wind control equipment, where applicable to substation work.
  • Conduct detailed panel wiring and low-voltage wiring to support protection and control schemes within utility distribution and substation design projects.
  • Troubleshoot wiring issues using schematics and diagrams to identify and resolve faults or discrepancies in control circuits.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of wiring work, including updates to diagrams or schematics as required by project standards.
  • Collaborate with project teams, including engineers and commissioning personnel, to ensure that protection and control wiring meets project specifications and operational requirements.
  • Work on-site five days per week for approximately 10 hours per day, often at the same location for several months at a time, to support continuous project progress.
  • Perform physical tasks that require standing for long periods and occasionally working in awkward positions to access wiring, panels, and equipment.
  • Follow all applicable safety procedures and guidelines while working in energized or partially energized substation environments.
  • Support the successful energization and operation of substation protection and control systems by delivering consistent, high-quality wiring and assembly work.

Essential Skills

  • Hands-on control wiring experience specifically in substation protection and controls (not general electrical or residential work).
  • Ability to read, understand, and independently follow electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Experience wiring #10 AWG and smaller conductors in control and low-voltage applications.
  • Proven experience with panel wiring and electrical assembly in industrial or utility environments.
  • Comfort working in substation environments, including greenfield and brownfield sites at different stages of energization.
  • Capability to perform point-to-point wiring with attention to detail and adherence to design specifications.
  • Physical ability to stand for long periods and occasionally work in awkward positions while performing wiring and assembly tasks.
  • Willingness and ability to be on-site five days per week for 10-hour workdays, often at the same job site for several consecutive months.
  • Experience in utility distribution, substation design, or closely related electrical engineering or electrical work.
  • Strong commitment to safety and compliance with procedures in energized or partially energized electrical environments.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with HVAC controls wiring and integration.
  • Experience with panel shop wiring in an industrial or utility setting.
  • Experience with fire alarm wiring and associated control circuits.
  • Experience with PLC wiring and control system integration.
  • Experience with solar and wind control wiring in power or renewable energy applications.
  • Residence in the Texas / Oklahoma panhandle or southeastern New Mexico is preferred to support regular on-site work.
  • Residence in the Amarillo area is preferred and may provide easier access to project locations.
  • Career interest in progressing to roles such as pre-commissioning agent or commissioning agent within substation protection and controls.

Work Environment

The role is primarily field-based in substation environments across the Texas / Oklahoma panhandle and southeastern New Mexico, with a preference for candidates living in or near the Amarillo area. You work on greenfield and brownfield substations at various stages of energization, often at the same site for several months at a time. The schedule typically consists of five on-site days per week with 10-hour shifts, requiring extended periods of standing and occasional work in awkward positions to access equipment and wiring. The environment is industrial and utility-focused, involving protection and control systems, low-voltage wiring, panel assemblies, and related electrical infrastructure. Work is performed in accordance with rigorous safety standards and procedures appropriate for substation and utility distribution settings.
