This posting is intended to fill multiple vacancies, which may be filled as Substation Apprentice 2nd Year, 3rd Year, 4th Year, or Substation Technician based on the experience and qualifications of the selected candidates.

The selected candidates are required to live within or relocate within 40 miles of the service area headquarters (2802 N Frazier, Conroe, TX 77303) and this position does not offer relocation benefits.

The below job description is that of a Substation Apprentice but the qualifications, duties and responsibilities may increase/adjust according to the level that the position is filled.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Under close supervision, as an apprentice in training, must be willing and able to perform the less difficult tasks and assist others in high and low voltage work involved in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of electric transmission and distribution substations and other equipment, and be qualified to do the following and related work as assigned:

  • Assist in the erection of steel structures, including foundations.
  • Work on energized conductors, circuits and busses up to 500 volts.
  • Install miscellaneous hardware, grounds, fittings during construction. Buss supports, and conductors on dead circuits.
  • Perform transmission and distribution switching.
  • Tie knots and splice rope.
  • Assist qualified mechanic in simple routine inspection and maintenance.
  • Assist in the handling, moving and installation of all transmission, distribution and plant equipment, machinery, etc.
  • Assist in testing and filtering oil and minor repairs to transformers, oil circuit breakers, regulations, etc.
  • Prepare reports and records.
  • Operate Company's vehicles and equipment.

EXPERIENCE AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Know Company's safety rules and be willing and able to administer all approved methods of resuscitation and be willing and able to render practical first aid.
  • Know the location of, and be willing and able to operate, all of the firefighting equipment. Know what kind of equipment to use on electrical, oil and other fires.
  • Hold a current Class A CDL license or be willing and able to obtain one within a specified time period.
  • Have knowledge of line and substation material and use of line and substation construction tools and equipment.

Substation Apprentice 2nd Year: Must have worked for at least 1 year, and qualified, as a Substation Apprentice 1st Year, or have had equivalent experience in related work, having all the qualifications of the previous classifications.

Substation Apprentice 3rd Year: Must have worked for at least 1 year, and qualified, as a Substation Apprentice 2nd Year, or have had equivalent experience in related work, having all the qualifications of the previous classifications.

Substation Apprentice 4th Year: Must have worked for at least 1 year, and qualified, as a Substation Apprentice 3rd Year, or have had equivalent experience in related work, having all the qualifications of the previous classifications.

Substation Technician: Must have worked for at least 1 year, and qualified, as a Substation Apprentice 4th Year, or have had equivalent experience in related work, having all the qualifications of the previous classifications.

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be willing and able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Be particularly alert in observing hazards, communicating issues and avoiding accidents.
