Job description

Job Title: Substation Apprentice 1st Year - Substation Technician

Work Place Flexibility: Onsite 

Legal Entity: Entergy Louisiana, LLC 

The selected candidate is required to live within or relocate within 45 miles of the service area headquarters. This position does not offer relocation benefits.

Location requirements may differ for certain roles based on established regional operational needs. 

This position is designated as a Safety Sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre-employment and random drug testing.

Sub Tech Helper 1st Year – Substation Technician

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under close supervision, as an apprentice in training, must be willing and able to perform the less difficult tasks and assist others in high and low voltage work involved in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of electric transmission and distribution substations and other equipment, and be qualified to do the following and related work as assigned:

Ability to obtain Substation switchman certification.

Familiarity in reading, understanding, and following technical manuals and instruction books.

Familiarity in the use of AC and DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and construction drawings.

Familiarity with hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.

Able to climb structures, ladders, operate lift trucks and work without fear of height.

Able to perform routine and emergency maintenance, testing, initial installation and restoration of substations and related equipment.

Able to perform substation switching and practice safe tagging and grounding procedures.

Must be available for 24-hour callout and to work extended hours.

Must obtain a valid CDL within 180 days.

Operate Company's vehicles and equipment in for its intended purpose

Good physical condition and able to lift 100 pounds.

Good hand-eye coordination, physical dexterity, and color vision.

Good interpersonal skills and ability to work harmoniously with coworkers and relate to customers.

Good computer skills and communication skills (oral and written).

Be self-motivated with ability to make independent decisions.

Able to work near energized equipment safely.

Prepare reports and records in accordance with regulatory compliance

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

Minimum education required of the position:

• A high school diploma or general education degree (GED)

 

EXPERIENCE AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Know Company's safety rules and be willing and able to administer all approved methods of resuscitation and be willing and able to render practical first aid.
  • Know the location of, and be willing and able to operate, all the firefighting equipment. Know what kind of equipment to use on electrical, oil and other fires.
  • Hold a current Class A CDL license or be willing and able to obtain one within a specified time.
  • Have knowledge of line and substation material and use of line and substation construction tools and equipment.

Helper 1st Year: 0 years experience required

Substation Apprentice 1st Year: worked for at least 1 year as a qualified Helper, Helper Substation Dept., OR have equivalent experience in related work having all the qualifications of the previous classifications.

Substation Apprentice 2nd Year: Must have worked for at least 1 year, and qualified, as a Substation Apprentice 1st Year, or have had equivalent experience in related work, having all the qualifications of the previous classifications.

Substation Apprentice 3rd Year: Must have worked for at least 1 year, and qualified, as a Substation Apprentice 2nd Year, or have had equivalent experience in related work, having all the qualifications of the previous classifications.

Substation Apprentice 4th Year: Must have worked for at least 1 year, and qualified, as a Substation Apprentice 3rd Year, or have had equivalent experience in related work, having all the qualifications of the previous classifications.

Substation Technician: Must have worked for at least 1 year, and qualified, as a Substation Apprentice 4th Year, or have had equivalent experience in related work, having all the qualifications of the previous classifications.

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be willing and able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

One way that Entergy has found to identify and assess the abilities and skills needed for certain jobs is through pre-employment testing.
