Overview

The Engineering Project Manager is responsible for leading the engineering, design, and execution of electrical substation projects from conceptual development through commissioning and project closeout. This role provides technical leadership, project management, and cross-functional coordination to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with applicable industry standards and client requirements.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience in high-voltage electrical substations, power system engineering, utility construction, and multidisciplinary project management.


Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Manage the complete lifecycle of electrical substation projects ranging from distribution to transmission voltage levels.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, budgets, resource plans, and risk assessments.
  • Monitor project progress and implement corrective actions to maintain schedule and budget performance.
  • Lead project kickoff meetings, status reviews, and stakeholder communications.
  • Coordinate engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning activities.

Engineering Leadership

  • Oversee electrical engineering design for new substations, expansions, upgrades, and modernization projects.
  • Review and approve engineering deliverables, including:
    • Single-line diagrams
    • Protection and control drawings
    • Relay settings
    • AC/DC station service systems
    • Grounding studies
    • Equipment layouts
    • Cable schedules
    • Bill of materials
  • Ensure compliance with applicable utility standards, client specifications, and industry codes.

Construction Support

  • Provide engineering support during construction and field installation.
  • Resolve technical issues and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Coordinate engineering changes and design revisions.
  • Support equipment testing, energization, and commissioning activities.
  • Conduct site visits to verify construction quality and engineering compliance.

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Serve as the primary engineering contact for clients, contractors, utilities, and regulatory agencies.
  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships through proactive communication and technical expertise.
  • Prepare project reports, presentations, and executive-level updates.
  • Support proposal development, scope definition, and project estimates.

Quality & Safety

  • Promote a strong safety culture throughout all phases of project execution.
  • Ensure engineering work complies with OSHA requirements, company safety policies, and industry best practices.
  • Implement quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures.
  • Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, and lessons learned meetings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • 5+ years of experience in electrical engineering with a focus on substation design and construction.
  • 2+ years of project management experience leading multidisciplinary engineering projects.
  • Strong understanding of utility transmission and distribution systems.
  • Experience managing EPC or design-build projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and project scheduling software (Microsoft Project or Primavera P6).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Experience with utility clients, renewable energy interconnections, or transmission infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with engineering software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, ETAP, SKM PowerTools, or CYME.
  • Working knowledge of SCADA, Protection & Control, relay systems, and NERC/FERC requirements.
  • Experience managing projects valued from $1M to $100M+.
