We are seeking an experienced Substation Engineering Manager to lead and expand our engineering team. This role offers the opportunity to shape a rapidly growing Power Delivery group while supporting major utilities and transmission & distribution clients across the country. As the Substation Engineering Manager, you will oversee a team of engineers and designers responsible for delivering high voltage substation projects ranging from 12 kV to 500 kV. This position is based out of our office in San Diego or Irvine, CA.
Build, mentor, and manage a local team of substation engineers and designers.
Provide technical leadership across substation physical (primary) and protection & control (secondary) design.
Oversee development of engineering deliverables, including:
One line and three line diagrams
General arrangements and equipment layouts
Grounding, lightning protection, and conduit/cable routing plans
Protection & control schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts
Bills of material, specifications, and construction packages
Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering efforts with civil, structural, transmission, and SCADA/communications teams.
Support project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation.
Ensure engineering work meets quality standards, technical requirements, and client expectations.
Collaborate with project managers and construction teams to support EPC execution, constructability reviews, and field issue resolution.
Contribute to business growth by improving processes, developing standards, and supporting proposals and estimating.
10+ years of experience performing engineering related duties and/or management for substation projects.
P.E. license required
Knowledge of engineering and construction standards and processes including scheduling, contracts, coordinating and managing all disciplines
Ability to work independently with limited direction and oversight
Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) or Graduate degree in Engineering or related field from an ABET accredited university
Strong attention to detail; strong communication, interpersonal, leadership and team-building skills.
Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Competitive - demonstrating the desire to win the project and grow the team through leadership and teamwork.
Must be able to communicate through emails and utilize electronic meeting requests.
Must be able to represent Kiewit manner to owners, contractors, vendors and any other contacts outside the Kiewit organization.
Ability to work in a growing, adaptive and multi-discipline team environment
