Substantive Editor information

What is a substantive editor?

Substantive editors are professionals who review and refine written content at a deep structural level. Their role involves evaluating the organization, clarity, flow, and overall coherence of a manuscript, rather than just correcting grammar or spelling. They often suggest significant changes to improve the content’s effectiveness, such as reorganizing sections, clarifying arguments, or ensuring consistency in tone and style. Substantive editors work closely with authors to enhance the quality and impact of the writing, making it more suitable for its intended audience and purpose.

How does a substantive editor typically collaborate with authors and other editorial team members during the editing process?

Substantive Editors work closely with authors to clarify content, improve structure, and ensure the manuscript meets publication standards. They often provide detailed feedback, suggest reorganizations, and may hold meetings or correspond regularly to discuss revisions. Collaboration with copy editors and proofreaders is common to maintain consistency and address any language or formatting issues that arise after structural edits. This team-oriented approach helps ensure the final product is polished, coherent, and ready for publication.

Are substantive editors still in demand?

Substantive editors are still in demand as organizations seek to improve the clarity, coherence, and quality of their content, especially in publishing, academic, and corporate sectors. The role often requires strong editing skills, familiarity with style guides, and attention to detail, with demand remaining steady due to ongoing content creation needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a substantive editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Substantive Editor, you need advanced language proficiency, a deep understanding of narrative structure, and a degree in English, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with editing software like Microsoft Word’s Track Changes, content management systems, and relevant editorial style guides is typically required. Strong collaboration, critical thinking, and effective communication skills help you work closely with writers and provide constructive feedback. These competencies ensure that manuscripts are clear, coherent, and well-organized, ultimately improving the quality and impact of published content.

Job description

MX is looking for a Content Strategist to lead the creation of high-impact content that shapes how the financial services and fintech world understands the power of financial data. You bring deep expertise in B2B storytelling, a sharp editorial instinct, and the strategic vision to connect content to revenue outcomes.

What sets this role apart is an opportunity to help define how MX scales its voice - not just by writing more, but by writing smarter. You'll play a central role in developing and stewarding AI-assisted content workflows that keep our product messaging consistent, on-brand, and efficient across a growing volume of channels and campaigns. You'll be both a master practitioner and a multiplier: someone who raises the quality floor for everyone around you.

If you're a seasoned writer who's energized by the intersection of great storytelling and intelligent systems, and who thrives in a fast-paced fintech environment, this role is built for you.

Job Responsibilities

Content Strategy & Creation

  • Lead the development of long-form thought leadership, including whitepapers, research reports, executive bylines, and in-depth blogs that establish MX as a definitive voice in fintech
  • Own end-to-end content for 5+ major demand generation campaigns per year, from brief to post-launch optimization
  • Produce 3+ high-impact customer or partner stories per quarter through case studies, press releases, and media-ready narratives
  • Partner with Product Marketing to translate complex product positioning into compelling, audience-appropriate content across the funnel

AI-Assisted Messaging & Workflow Automation

  • Develop and maintain a library of AI-ready product messaging prompts, templates, and guardrails that enable the content team to produce on-brand material faster and more consistently
  • Implement and iterate on AI-assisted content workflows (using tools such as Gemini, Claude, or similar) to accelerate first-draft production, repurposing, and messaging QA
  • Establish messaging consistency standards that can be operationalized through prompt engineering, style guides embedded in AI tools, and structured content templates
  • Partner with Marketing Operations to evaluate, adopt, and optimize AI content tooling as part of MX's broader marketing stack

Quality, Brand & Editorial Standards Cross-Functional Leadership & Mentorship

  • Serve as a senior editorial voice and quality gatekeeper across all external-facing content, ensuring brand consistency in tone, terminology, and messaging hierarchy
  • Lead copy editing and messaging reviews on high-visibility materials, including website copy, sales resources, and executive communications
  • Maintain and evolve the MX content style guide in collaboration with the broader marketing team
  • Mentor junior and mid-level content writers, providing substantive editorial feedback and coaching on craft, structure, and strategic framing
  • Act as a senior content partner to Demand Gen, Product Marketing, PR, and Social - capable of scoping, advising, and executing across all content types
  • Contribute to content planning processes, including editorial calendar ownership, capacity planning, and campaign prioritization
Basic Qualifications
  • 6+ years of experience in B2B content marketing, content strategy, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience in a team lead or mentorship role in marketing or content
  • 2+ years of experience designing and using AI-assisted content workflows
  • A portfolio featuring 5+ multi-channel campaigns that demonstrates range - including long-form thought leadership, conversion-focused campaign content, and product-oriented copy, alongside evidence of strategic ownership
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong written communication skills with a proven ability to simplify complex technical or financial concepts for varied audiences
  • 4+ years of experience working cross-functionally in a fast-paced B2B SaaS or fintech environment
  • Familiarity with SEO best practices, CMS platforms, and content performance analytics
  • 4+ years of experience with SEO best practices, modern CMS platforms, and content performance analytics tools to track, report, and optimize content against set KPIs
