What is a Remote Line Editor?

A Remote Line Editor is a professional who reviews and refines written content for clarity, consistency, grammar, and style, working remotely rather than in a traditional office setting. Line editors focus on improving sentence structure, word choice, and flow at the sentence and paragraph level, ensuring the content is polished and coherent. They often collaborate with writers and other editors via digital communication tools, making the role ideal for those who prefer flexible work environments. Remote Line Editors are commonly employed in publishing, media, marketing, and technical writing industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Line Editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Line Editor, you need advanced grammar, punctuation, and style knowledge, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with editing software like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and track changes features is typically required. Attention to detail, strong time management, and clear communication are vital soft skills in this remote role. These skills ensure high-quality, error-free content and effective collaboration with writers and clients across distances.

What are some common challenges faced by remote line editors and how can they be addressed?

Remote line editors often face challenges such as maintaining clear communication with authors and team members, managing multiple projects with tight deadlines, and staying focused without in-person oversight. Utilizing collaborative editing tools, setting up regular check-ins, and establishing a consistent workflow can help address these issues. Building strong relationships with writers and maintaining organized schedules also contribute to a smoother remote editing experience.

Job description

**This job opening will remain open until our growing team is fully staffed.**

We at Legacy Tree Genealogists love helping people all over the world (in over 50 countries!) discover their heritage. We get up in the morning and do things like tell a client her birth father's name, connect cousins in China, and share documentation that an ancestor used an alias and actually fathered two families - at the same time, in two different countries. For over 20 years we've been changing people's lives forever by answering some of their deepest questions.
Legacy Tree needs additional support to keep providing the highest-rated genealogy research in the world to our clients. This is where you come in! We need exceptional people on our Project Management team who are able to build and maintain solid trust-centered relationships with our clients.

About You:

This isn't just a support role-it's the heart of the client experience at Legacy Tree. You'll be a great fit if:

  • You're a warm and professional communicator via phone, email, and text.
  • You're skilled at putting clients at ease and building their trust.
  • You're naturally empathetic and genuinely enjoy helping others.
  • You have excellent attention to detail, can juggle multiple responsibilities gracefully, and excel at staying on top of deadlines.
  • You're comfortable following and improving internal processes.
  • You stay calm under pressure and can de-escalate concerns with grace and patience.
  • You enjoy learning new tools and systems and are comfortable navigating tech platforms.
  • You're passionate about genealogy and want to help others explore their family stories.
  • You're comfortable with Microsoft Office suite, particularly Word and PowerPoint (even better if that includes OneDrive), as well as Google Docs Editors suite including Google Docs and Google Sheets.
  • You have experience with genealogy software (we use RootsMagic).
  • You have a quiet, dedicated workspace, a reliable computer, at least two monitors, and strong internet access.

Even better if:

  • You have a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • You have personal or professional genealogical research experience.
  • You have experience in customer service, hospitality, or another client-facing role.
  • You've supported emotionally sensitive or personally meaningful client journeys.

If this doesn't sound like you yet, don't worry-we're not going anywhere. You can sign up for notifications about future openings and check out other positions here.

What you'll be doing at Legacy Tree:

At Legacy Tree, our clients are trusting us with something deeply personal-their family history. Your job is to make sure that experience feels supportive, professional, and inspiring from start to finish.

In this client-facing role, you will:

  • Act as the main point of contact for clients, guiding them through each stage of their genealogy project.
  • Build rapport with clients through clear, timely, and empathetic communication via email, phone, and video meetings.
  • Onboard new clients by reviewing their goals, helping them navigate our New Client Checklist, and answering initial questions about the research process.
  • Facilitate the smooth setup of each project by collecting and organizing client materials (documents, family trees, DNA access, etc.).
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure deliverables are clear, polished, and aligned with the client's expectations.
  • Review research results through the client's lens-editing reports and updates as needed to ensure clarity, compassion, and professionalism.
  • Troubleshoot concerns, address questions, and gently guide clients through unexpected findings with care and sensitivity.
  • Support client reorders by recognizing their ongoing research needs and suggesting next steps when appropriate.
  • Help maintain client satisfaction metrics, reorder rates, and internal communication logs using project management tools.
  • Proactively flag and resolve issues before they escalate, leaning on a strong understanding of our internal workflows and values.

This is not a behind-the-scenes research role. It's front-line client relations and project management-an opportunity to support people as they learn powerful and sometimes life-changing truths about who they are and where they come from.

What Working at Legacy Tree Will be Like
We work hard to make working at Legacy Tree a great part of our team members' lives. Here's a little about what life here will be like:

Live and Work Where You Want
Legacy Tree has always been a remote-based company, which allows us to hire the best talent anywhere, and which allows our team members to be where they love. As long as you have a quiet place to work, a fast internet connection, and the ability to work most of your hours flexibly between 8am-6pm MT, Monday through Friday, that's what matters most.

This is ideally a part-time position requiring 25-29 hours per week. However, for the right applicant, we are open to exploring full-time (40 hours/week) or more flexible part-time schedules (under 25 hours/week). We're serious about providing the highest quality genealogy research, and we're also serious about work-life balance. We'll expect you to take paid holidays and vacation time. When you join us, we'll be asking to learn about your bucket list, and expecting to celebrate with you when you check something off.
Work with Great People
We may be a remote company, but when you're solving some of the toughest genealogy mysteries in the world and working with a variety of clients, there's a lot of cooperation that takes place. You'll get to know your team members pretty darn well, and you'll be grateful for their support when you have questions. Some of your co-workers will be Kim, Jessica, and Sheri and there are lots of others who you'll get to know, especially in our regular Zoom meetings, company chat Break Room and at our company retreats. You'll find out first-hand why Legacy Tree has won the awardBest and Brightest Companies to Work for in the Nation multiple times.

Get Great Benefits and Take Time to Ramp Up

Our part-time employees working 25-29 hours a week get great benefits like paid time off and ten paid holidays, parental and bereavement leave, yearly family history, training, conference and equipment stipends, and a 401k that we match up to 3%. We'll make sure you have time for training so you can be even better at your craft, we'll pay you to research your own family history, and you'll receive a bonus for every one of your clients that reorders, along with periodic bonuses when the company meets its goals.

Thank you
