Description
To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function of the position satisfactorily. The requirements listed in this document are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Incumbent serves as Licensed Addiction Counselor, responsible for serving as a treatment provider to participants serving time at Tippecanoe County Community Corrections, and coordinating treatment for individuals through collaboration with community treatment providers.
DUTIES:
- Assesses individuals for substance abuse dependency and/or use or care, or services required and recommended for successful completion of program, including interpreting court orders, completing and filing all necessary admission documentation, and providing information for Case Managers and other service providers.Â
- Assesses and reports cases of chemical dependency, substance abuse, potential suicide, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect.
- Facilitates individuals or group classes in compliance with Standards of Care, addressing substance abuse education and relapse prevention.Â
- Aids in completion, with regards to substance abuse treatments, of progress reports, discharge summaries and documentation of treatment sessions.Â
- Reviews and evaluates potential participants for placement on a Community Corrections program, including reviewing confidential case history information.
- Coordinates program services with other service providers. Reports and/or occasionally testifies in legal proceeding/court as required.
- Maintains records and prepares reports to document all relevant case information through the use of case notes, incident reports, court reports, assessments, treatment plans, treatment plan reviews, evaluation, and discharge summaries.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Requirements
I. JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's Degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.Â
- Possession of either a Certification as a Licensed Addiction Counselor from an accredited program, or licensure as an Addictions Counselor from the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency or be actively pursuing said credentials via approved means.
- Possession of or ability to obtain possession of required certifications, such as First Aid/CPR, Taser, OC Spray, and/or Firearms.
- Ability to meet all employer and departmental hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test, background check and polygraph examination. Ability to physically train in defensive tactics up to four (4) hours at a time.Â
- Working knowledge, but not limited to, the ability to properly use all assigned Departmental uniforms and/or equipment, including computer, printer, calculator, metal detector, body scanner, mechanical hand restraints, breathalyzer, cameras, radio, telephone, video surveillance cameras and electronic locking devices.Â
- Working knowledge of policy and procedures and basic understanding of Community Corrections Programs.Â
- Working knowledge of standard policies and practices of legal process, with ability to effectively apply and enforce applicable policies and procedures, complete required case reports, make recommendations to court, and apply and adapt procedures as cases demand.Â
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, various law enforcement agencies, attorneys, program participants and their families, and members of the public including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
- Working knowledge of and ability to utilize Evidence Based Practices and remain current on best practices in the correctional field. ability to communicate with incensed participants and deal with situations that arise using motivational interviewing and de-escalation techniques Ability to effectively prepare and complete all required forms and reports within established department deadlines.Â
- Ability to supervise staff, including providing orientation to new employees, delegating work assignments, providing training and corrective instruction, evaluation work performance, and maintaining discipline.Â
- Ability to deal swiftly, rationally, and decisively with potentially violent individuals in precarious situations, and take authoritative action applying appropriate discretion and common sense.Â
- Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to State requirements.Â
- Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.Â
- Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.Â
- Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment. Often working under pressure and on several tasks at the same time.Â
- Ability to work extended, weekend, and/or irregular hours and travel out of town, sometimes overnight.
- Ability to serve on 24-hour call and respond swiftly, rationally and decisively to emergency situations.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and a demonstrate a safe driving record.
II. DIFFICULTY OF WORK:
Incumbent operates within broad and general guidelines, exercising discretion and independent judgment in selecting the appropriate approach or adapting unclear guidelines to address specific situations. Numerous duties are performed that are not directly related to one another.
III. RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent performs standard, recurring duties according to established department policies and legal procedures, making independent decisions and taking authoritative action in response to situational demands. Errors in decisions or work may result delays in other departments/agencies and/or endangerment to self and/or members of the public.
IV. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
Incumbent maintains frequent communication orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, various law enforcement agencies, attorneys, program participants and their families, and the public, including giving and receiving information, rendering service, and providing instruction.
Incumbent reports directly to the Executive Director or authorized designee.
