As of Aug 18, 2026, the average yearly pay for subsea engineer in Seattle, WA is $127,111.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $91,700.00 and $150,900.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a subsea engineer?

Subsea Engineers are specialized engineers who design, install, maintain, and repair equipment and systems used underwater, primarily for the oil and gas industry. They work with complex subsea production systems, pipelines, and control mechanisms on the seabed to ensure safe and efficient extraction of resources. Their role involves solving technical challenges posed by deepwater environments and often collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. Subsea Engineers also play a key role in ensuring equipment integrity and environmental protection.

What does a subsea engineer do?

As a subsea engineer, you design and develop equipment and components for use in offshore, undersea areas. Many subsea engineers work for the gas and petroleum industry, but this job is not exclusive to that area. In this role, you may design structures to account for problems like low temperatures, high pressure, corrosion, and aquatic life. Given the challenging environment, this job requires the ability to design structures in a way that allows divers to repair them without exposing the rest of the structure to risk. To accomplish this, you may need the requisite diving skills to examine worksites in person, gather data about the area, and provide customized solutions for subsea engineering needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a subsea engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Subsea Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical or subsea engineering, along with experience in offshore operations and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with subsea control systems, CAD software, ROV technology, and certifications like IMCA or OPITO are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication help you adapt to challenging environments and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring the safety, reliability, and successful execution of complex underwater projects.

What are some common challenges faced by subsea engineers when working offshore, and how are they typically addressed?

Subsea Engineers working offshore often encounter challenges such as harsh weather conditions, limited access to equipment, and the need for precise coordination with multidisciplinary teams. To overcome these obstacles, Subsea Engineers rely on thorough planning, robust communication systems, and specialized training in safety protocols. Collaboration with remotely operated vehicle (ROV) pilots, marine crews, and project managers is essential to ensure smooth operations and rapid problem-solving in dynamic environments.

What is the difference between Subsea Engineer vs Offshore Structural Engineer?

AspectSubsea EngineerOffshore Structural Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Marine, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering; certifications in subsea systemsBachelor's in Civil or Structural Engineering; certifications in offshore structures
Work EnvironmentUnderwater, subsea facilities, offshore oil & gas fieldsOffshore platforms, marine construction sites
Industry UsageOil & gas, renewable energy, subsea infrastructureOil & gas, offshore wind farms, marine construction

Subsea Engineers focus on designing, installing, and maintaining underwater systems and equipment, primarily in subsea oil and gas fields. Offshore Structural Engineers specialize in designing and analyzing structures like platforms and supports in offshore environments. While both roles work in offshore settings and require engineering credentials, Subsea Engineers are more underwater-focused, whereas Offshore Structural Engineers concentrate on above-water structures.
