What is subsea engineering?

A Subsea Engineering job involves designing, installing, operating, and maintaining equipment and infrastructure used in underwater environments, primarily for offshore oil and gas production. Subsea engineers work on components like pipelines, control systems, and wellheads to ensure safe and efficient energy extraction. They collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to solve technical challenges related to deepwater pressures, corrosion, and remote operations. This role requires expertise in mechanical, electrical, and offshore engineering principles, along with knowledge of industry regulations and safety standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in subsea engineering?

To thrive in Subsea Engineering, you need a strong background in mechanical, electrical, or ocean engineering, preferably supported by a relevant engineering degree and experience with underwater systems. Familiarity with subsea design software, ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) operations, and certifications such as IMCA or OPITO are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help navigate complex underwater projects and multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient, and innovative execution of challenging projects in offshore environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by subsea engineers, and how do they address them?

Subsea Engineers often encounter challenges such as harsh underwater conditions, limited accessibility for repairs, and the need for precise installation and maintenance of subsea equipment. To address these issues, they utilize advanced technology like ROVs and specialized monitoring systems, while closely collaborating with other engineering disciplines and offshore operations teams. Adaptability and proactive problem-solving are essential, as engineers may need to develop creative solutions on tight timelines. Continuous learning and adherence to strict safety protocols also play a critical role in overcoming the unique demands of subsea environments.

Job description

About Endurance
Endurance is building the world's first modular subsea geothermal power plants, converting vast thermal resources under the ocean into gigawatts of baseload power. Backed by Founders Fund, Felicis, First Round Capital, and Point72 Ventures, our founding team includes veterans from SpaceX, Helion, Blue Origin, and Apple. We have completed multiple deep-ocean deployments to subsea volcanoes and are launching a long-term demonstration project this fall. By leveraging modular design, manufacturing scale, efficient drilling, and latent cooling on the seafloor, we are pioneering a new category of energy that outperforms traditional sources on environmental impact, deployment speed, and cost.
What you'll be doing
As a Senior/Principal Software Engineer at Endurance, you will build software to optimize and accelerate every aspect of the company. As we scale from our first hundred-kilowatt subsea demonstration to gigawatt deployments, you will architect, configure, and build the internal systems to run the hydrothermal power plant, the testing software, the cloud infrastructure, and the tooling for all engineers at the company.
We believe an internal software team building the right stack is one of the highest leverage moves we can make as we scale.
You will be in the room with the hardware engineers designing subsea power plants, the manufacturing leads building the production system, the supply chain leads structuring procurement, and the operators running ocean deployments, designing and delivering the software that makes their work faster, safer, and more scalable. In the near term, that means standing up the data and telemetry pipeline for our first subsea demonstration, building out our cloud services, scoping and selecting the foundational engineering and manufacturing systems, designing the supply chain and procurement tooling that will support our first 10MW commercial deployments, and prototyping the first generation of Endurance's internal tools.
You will also build the production software that makes a power plant on the seafloor operable. You will design the data pipeline that streams from a turbine kilometers below the surface, the dashboards that let a Seattle control room run a plant off Tonga, and the operational software that turns a fleet of subsea power plants into a utility.
The ideal candidate is a senior or staff engineer who has strong judgment on when to buy a vendor product and when to write your own, can hold technical credibility with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers, and is energized by building the software that operates a category of energy infrastructure that has never existed before.
You will be one of the first full-stack software engineer at the company. You will work directly with the founding team and the operational leaders across Endurance, and as the software function grows, you will have significant influence on what gets built, who joins the team, and how the organization is shaped.
Key Responsibilities
  • Architect and build the telemetry, data, and operational software that runs Endurance's power plants on the seafloor and supports subsea deployment operations
  • Make and execute the build, buy, and configure calls on standing up software for procurement, hardware engineering, telemetry, and operational tooling software
  • Interface closely with internal customers to understand their workflows, inefficiencies, and needs - so you can create great software to accelerate them
  • Write production code, set engineering standards, and build the technical patterns that the broader software team will inherit
  • Partner with engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, finance, and policy leaders to ensure the software roadmap maps to operational reality
  • Establish cybersecurity, data governance, and development practices appropriate for a venture-backed company operating across federal, defense, and international markets
  • Own the technical foundation that the broader software organization is built on
  • Help shape the software organization as it grows, including interviewing and onboarding future engineers

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience
  • Track record architecting, shipping, and operating internal software systems
  • Demonstrated ability to ship production software end to end, from architecture through deployment and operation
  • Technical fluency strong enough to hold credibility with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers
  • Comfort being an early software engineer at a venture-backed company at sub-fifty headcount, including all the ambiguity that comes with it
  • Ability to work onsite in Seattle and travel to deployment sites as required

Preferred Skills
  • Experience at all levels of the software stack -- from microcontrollers to cloud computing.
  • Familiarity with Rust and Nix.
  • Experience with manufacturing execution systems, supplier development tooling, or quality data systems at scale
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity frameworks relevant to defense and federal contracting (CMMC, NIST 800-171, FedRAMP)
  • Prior experience standing up software for ITAR / EAR controlled environments
  • Background in subsea, aerospace, defense, or other regulated hardware industries
Compensation, Benefits, & Perks
As a pre-revenue startup, Endurance Energy offers competitive base salaries and generous equity packages for full-time employees. Final base salary will be determined by an array of factors including internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and work experience.
A key aspect of our compensation philosophy is that value creation should be aligned with rewards. Right now this means equity is a significant portion of every full-time employee's compensation. As the company matures, there will be continued evolution and changes to the total rewards and total compensation package. What will always be true is that if we win, we win together. Equity is granted to every full-time employee as a meaningful piece of ownership. We believe the people building the company should share directly in the value they create.
In addition to a competitive base salary and equity, employees will receive all of our other great benefits and perks, including:
  • Benefits: Health, Dental, and Vision insurance coverage
  • Time Away: Flexible PTO including 12 paid company holidays
  • Global Fieldwork: Travel to fascinating deployment sites along oceanic ridges in locations like the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, and the Azores
  • Hands-on Experience: Participate in sea trials and deployment operations in partnership with leading oceanographic institutions
  • Cutting-edge Development: Work with technology that spans high-power electronics, marine systems, and clean energy
  • Impactful Work: Help solve one of the world's most pressing challenges
  • Dive Certification: Company-sponsored recreational dive certification
  • Other Perks: Access to the company boat, free meals and snacks, and the list goes on!

If you're selected for consideration, a recruiter will be able to discuss in greater detail.
