How much do subnet jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 27, 2026, the average hourly pay for subnet in the United States is $26.34, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.14 and $30.77 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a subnet task?

A subnet task involves dividing a larger network into smaller, manageable subnetworks to improve security, performance, and organization. Network administrators use subnetting to allocate IP address ranges efficiently and may utilize tools like subnet calculators or perform binary calculations to determine network and host addresses.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Network Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking protocols, subnetting, and IP addressing, typically supported by a relevant degree and certifications such as Cisco's CCNA or CompTIA Network+. Familiarity with network hardware, firewalls, routing and switching equipment, and network management tools is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for designing, implementing, and maintaining secure, efficient, and reliable network infrastructures.

What are some typical challenges faced by subnet administrators and how can they be addressed?

Subnet administrators often encounter challenges such as managing IP address allocation efficiently, ensuring network security, and troubleshooting connectivity issues between subnets. Staying organized with IP address management tools and regularly updating network documentation can help prevent conflicts and outages. Collaboration with security and systems teams is essential to enforce access controls and monitor for potential vulnerabilities, while ongoing training in network protocols supports effective problem-solving.

What are Subnets?

Subnets, short for 'subnetworks,' are segments of a larger computer network that are divided to improve performance and security. By splitting a network into smaller, more manageable sections, subnets help reduce congestion and make it easier to isolate network issues. Subnetting also allows organizations to efficiently allocate IP addresses and control traffic between different segments. This is commonly used in both enterprise and cloud environments to organize and secure network resources.

What is the difference between Subnet vs Network Technician?

AspectSubnetNetwork Technician
Required CredentialsNetworking certifications (e.g., CCNA), technical knowledgeNetworking certifications, troubleshooting skills
Work EnvironmentDesigning, planning, and managing IP address allocationsInstalling, maintaining, and troubleshooting network hardware and software
Employer & Industry UsageIT departments, network providers, data centersIT support firms, corporate IT teams, telecom companies
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding network segmentation and IP managementTechnical support and network maintenance roles

While a Subnet involves dividing a larger network into smaller segments for efficient management, a Network Technician focuses on maintaining and troubleshooting network hardware and software. Both roles require networking knowledge and certifications, but subnetting is more about network design, whereas technicians handle day-to-day network operations.

What are the types of subnets?

Subnetting involves dividing a network into smaller subnetworks or subnets, primarily categorized into IPv4 and IPv6 subnets. IPv4 subnets are further classified into classes such as Class A, B, and C, while IPv6 subnets use a different addressing scheme with larger address space. Understanding subnet types is essential for network design, security, and efficient IP address management for network administrators and IT professionals.

What jobs do subnet jobs specialize in?

Subnet jobs typically refer to roles in networking and IT that focus on designing, implementing, and managing IP subnetworks. These positions often require knowledge of network protocols, subnetting techniques, and network security, with certifications like Cisco CCNA being beneficial. Common roles include network administrators, network engineers, and systems analysts responsible for optimizing network performance and security.

What is the best job for networking?

A network administrator or network engineer is a common job for networking professionals, responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining computer networks. These roles typically require knowledge of networking protocols, hardware, and security, along with certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+. They often work in IT departments or technology firms and may require on-call availability for troubleshooting issues.
