Studies Engineer information

What are some common challenges Studies Engineers face when managing multiple research and development projects simultaneously?

Studies Engineers often juggle several projects at once, each with unique technical requirements and deadlines. Balancing these priorities can be challenging, especially when resources are limited or when stakeholders have conflicting expectations. Effective time management, clear communication with cross-functional teams, and adaptability are essential skills for navigating these complexities. Proactively identifying potential bottlenecks and maintaining detailed project documentation can also help Studies Engineers deliver successful outcomes across multiple initiatives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Studies Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Studies Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, analytical problem-solving skills, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools, and project management systems is often required, along with knowledge of industry-specific standards. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability help Studies Engineers effectively collaborate and present findings to stakeholders. These skills are vital for developing accurate studies, optimizing project outcomes, and ensuring solutions align with organizational and client needs.

What are Studies Engineers?

Studies Engineers are professionals who analyze, design, and optimize technical solutions for engineering projects. They often work in sectors such as construction, energy, transport, or manufacturing, where they are responsible for conducting feasibility studies, preparing technical documentation, and ensuring that projects meet regulatory and safety standards. Their role involves collaborating with project managers, designers, and other engineers to ensure that the proposed solutions are both technically sound and cost-effective.

What You'll Do
As a Studies Engineer, you will lead advanced power system analysis in the renewable energy sector. You'll manage complex studies-such as TOV, TRV, AC interference, 5mA, insulation coordination, and EMF-using tools like PSCAD, Polaris, CDEGS, ASPEN Line Constants, and TLW-GEN. Your expertise will drive smarter, safer, and more efficient energy solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct high-level system studies to support renewable energy projects.
  • Apply specialized software to model and analyze electrical phenomena.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to interpret results and recommend solutions.
  • Ensure technical accuracy and compliance with industry standards.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Develop procedures for new study areas and support business development.
  • Serve as technical lead on projects, coordinating with internal teams, external partners, and clients.
  • Conduct technical reviews and enforce quality control standards.
  • Research new technologies and contribute to process improvements.
  • Participate in client meetings, present technical information, and support proposal development.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET-accredited or equivalent).
  • Have or working towards a PE or P.Eng. license, required.
  • A minimum of 4 years of working experience, with at least 3 years of experience directly related to power systems.
  • Proficiency with engineering software: ETAP, Easypower, PSCAD, Polaris, CDEGS, ASPEN Line Constants, TLW-GEN.
  • Experience working on renewable projects required.
  • Ability to independently manage workload and complete tasks.
  • Strong analytical skills, self-motivated, and able to work under pressure.
  • Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with staff, management, clients, and external agencies.
  • Must have authorization to work permanently in U.S

Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience performing electromagnetic transient (EMT) and switching transient studies, including lightning, switching events, converter-based resource interactions, and protection-related transients.
  • Hands-on experience with transient modeling and analysis tools such as PSCAD (or equivalent EMT tools).
