Nature & Purpose of Position
  • Purpose of Position and UNIV 1101:
    • As a peer mentor, you will perform duties and responsibilities under the general direction of the Associate Director of First-Year Experience and support students and the instructors in your assigned UNIV 1101 section(s). This position works independently and in team settings, to promote academic success, student engagement, personal development, and meaningful connections with SHSU Students, Faculty, Staff, and resources.
    • UNIV 1101 (Bearkat U) is a course designed for first-year students to explore career paths, connect to campus resources and services, and learn to develop and apply self-directed learning skills to their own academic programs and career development. You will work with students individually and in small groups as a peer mentor to ensure personalized attention. This course meets twice per week for 1 hour (2 hours per week total) with the 1st day led by the instructor and the 2nd day led by a group of peer mentors.
  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Support students, instructors, and fellow peer mentors in assigned UNIV 1101 section(s) and leads the second-day session of UNIV 1101 with a group of peer mentors
    • Mentor individual students and small groups in areas such as:
      • Academic skills and habits of mind
      • Time management and goal setting
      • Connecting with resources and other support services on campus
    • Attend all training and weekly team meetings
    • Provide mentoring and assistance with registration and schedule building
      • Access student information and submit appointment reports within FERPA guidelines
    • Maintain a professional attitude about matters such as class standards, grades, and student complaints
    • Model appropriate professional behavior to students, staff, and faculty
    • Other Responsibilities:
      • Support First-Year Experience during new student orientation
      • Attend events for First-Year Experience as needed
      • Provide tours as requested
      • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Director
Other Requirements for the Position
  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • Must have completed a FAFSA for the current academic term
    • Currently enrolled at SHSU and is in good academic standing
    • An overall GPA of 2.75 or above (on a 4.0 scale).
    • Be available Fridays at 9:00 AM for Team Meetings
    • Be available over the summer for virtual trainings and the in-person mentor retreat in August (Schedule is TBD)
    • Be able to work a minimum of 10 hours per week
    • Demonstrate a growth mindset with the willingness to learn and be flexible
    • Possess exceptional interpersonal communication skills with the ability to apply them in one-on-one and group settings
    • An ability to work effectively and collaboratively, especially with individuals from diverse backgrounds
    • Understands and maintains healthy boundaries in peer mentoring
    • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to receive feedback from supervisor and colleagues
    • Effective time management and organizational skills
    • Positive and professional attitude
