Job description

Department OverviewThe O'Roak lab is focused on using genomic approaches to unlock the genetic basis of neurodevelopmental disorders and related disorders, such as autism and intellectual disability. The long-term goal is to develop early interventions and biologically based personal therapies that can dramatically improve the lives of individuals affected with these disorders.Function/Duties of Position
  • Under direct supervision, primarily performs basic research or lab activities similar to a Research Assistant 1 or Lab Aide.  
Required Qualifications
  • Enrolled in or on vacation from or is otherwise registered in an Undergraduate Program (minimum 6 credit hours).
  • Completion of introductory courses in biology and chemistry.

  • Previous lab experience through courses or prior positions.

  • Experience following experimental protocols.

  • Ability to perform basic lab calculations (e.g. dilution and solution calculations).

  • Keeping detailed lab notebook.

  • Ability to pay close attention to detail.

  • Critical thinking skills (e.g. inference, problem solving, decision-making).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic molecular biology techniques.

  • Rodent handling experience.

  • Cell culture experience.

  • Completion of additional relevant courses such as Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, etc.
Additional Details

This is a part-time student worker position within the O'Roak lab, Department of Molecular & Medical Genetics. We anticipate a flexible schedule of 10-20 hours per week. This person will work closely with other lab personnel on projects related to the molecular and cellular basis of autism. Key duties will include mouse genotyping, human cell culture, preparation of reagents, and basic molecular biology. Laboratory is located on OHSU Marquam Hill Campus.
