O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs (O'Neill School) prepares students to make positive changes in their communities, their states, their countries, and their world. A multidisciplinary institute within the O'Neill School, the Indiana University (IU) Public Policy Institute delivers unbiased research and data-driven, objective, expert analysis to help public, private, and nonprofit sectors make important decisions that directly impact quality of life in Indiana and throughout the nation. The O'Neill School operates as a core school model, with programs at 2 locations: Indianapolis and IU Bloomington.
Job Summary
Departmental-Specific Responsibilities
  • Directs the operations of the Office of Student Services and its staff members in functions related to undergraduate and graduate education at O'Neill, including admissions and academic advising, retention, experiential learning opportunities and initiatives, and recording/recordkeeping services to prospective and current students.
  • Develops and maintains operational policies and practices to ensure an effective student services environment. In collaboration with the Executive Associate Dean and Assistant Dean of Student Services develops strategic plan for undergraduate and graduate student services and programs.
  • Collaborates with faculty to ensure staff advising efforts complement faculty advising and enhance student success opportunities.
  • Creates systems to give students meaningful advice regarding entry into the school, and creation of an academic plan of study in collaboration with Career Services.
  • Coordinates efforts to provide students with meaningful opportunities for extramural and experiential learning.
  • Supervises staff assigned to academic and extracurricular advising, admissions support, and recording / recordkeeping. Hires and trains. Manages workload, workflow, and performance.
  • Manages all undergraduate and graduate admissions and recording services.
General Responsibilities
  • Provides highest level of operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff members to define student services methodologies and standards; provides direction and guidance on high priority student services projects/initiatives.
  • Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives, including managing project timelines/deliverables and developing resource plans for multi-project/multi-phase student services initiatives.
  • Conducts a variety of personnel actions to include, but not limited to hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal.
  • Manages high level assignments and allocation of student services resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that involve staff in other departments/areas/teams; may coordinate large-scale student services projects with wide audiences in support of academic, wellness, inclusion, and safety initiatives.
  • Makes budgetary recommendations/proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment.
  • Researches and stays up-to-date on new industry student services standards, technologies, policies, and procedures; responsible for the implementation of new protocols/procedures to address business needs.
  • Works collaboratively with other student services leaders across departments in recommending standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures.
  • Prepares management reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, steering and advisory committees; acts as advisor to executive committees; serves on various university committees, communities of practice, and task forces related to student services.

EDUCATION
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in law, public health, public affairs, counseling, social work, or a related field.
Preferred

WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
  • 4 years in student services, higher education student affairs, or related field.
  • 1 year of management experience in a relevant field.
