Job description

About the Opportunity

Job Summary:

This Lab Technician role serves the students, faculty, and staff in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) department. A portion of time is solely dedicated to the Additive Manufacturing Lab serving the MIE Capstone program, this student group has approximately 195 students in total per Fall and Spring semesters. MIE students in Capstone are tasked with developing a concept idea into a working prototype within a six-month class experience.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

The major tasks for the Lab Technician are as follows:

  • to maintain the operation of the MIE Additive Manufacturing (3D) printing lab,

  • assist students with 3D printing design,

  • managements and upkeep of Capstone studio,

  • Partnering with other MIE lab technicians to maintain all MIE teaching labs. The MIE department has five teaching labs serving >700 students per semester.

Another portion of time is focused on assisting the Department Chair with the maintenance of safety in teaching and research lab spaces. Some associated tasks are:

  • assisting with and decommissioning of teaching/research labs,

  • oversight and maintenance of teaching lab spaces; and

  • working with faculty and technical staff to prepare for lab courses and training of teaching assistants

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in an engineering field or equivalent job experience.

  • Must have experience with SLA and FDF/FFF 3D printers.

  • Excellent social skills for interacting with undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and research.

  • Safety experience in a lab or machine shop is a plus.
