Job description
POSITION: $1 Assistant Volleyball Coach
LOCATION: Pocahontas County High SchoolÂ
CLASSIFICATION: Extra-Duty Assignment
REPORTS TO: Head Coach, Athletic Director, and PrincipalÂ
EVALUATION: Evaluations conducted as defined in West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5310 and PCBOE Policy 3220.
FLSA STATUS: Exempt

JOB DESCRIPTIONÂ
To assist the Head Coach in providing leadership, instruction, supervision, and support for the athletic program while promoting the educational, physical, social, emotional, and character development of student-athletes and maintaining full compliance with WVSSAC regulations, WVBE policies, county board procedures, and school expectations.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED required; bachelor's degree preferred.
- Valid West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) Coaching Authorization, or documented eligibility to obtain authorization, in compliance with WVBE Policy 5209 and WVSSAC regulations.
- Successful completion of a fingerprint-based criminal background check in accordance with WVBE Policy 5209 and county board of education requirements.
- Completion of all WVSSAC and NFHS-required coaching education courses prior to participation in practices or contests, including:
- Concussion in Sports
- Sudden Cardiac Arrest
- Heat Illness Prevention
- Any additional courses required by WVSSAC, WVDE, or the county board of education.
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
- Ability to maintain annual authorization and certification requirements, including completion of all required WVDE, WVSSAC, and county board documentation.

- Valid WV teaching certificate or WV substitute teaching permit
- Previous playing or coaching experience at the high school or collegiate level
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with student-athletes from diverse background.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESÂ
Program Leadership
- Support and carry out the vision, goals, expectations, and procedures established by the Head Coach.
- Assist in maintaining a program culture emphasizing sportsmanship, accountability, integrity, teamwork, and academic achievement.
- Support the administration and operation of the assigned athletic program.
- Supervise student managers, student assistants, and other support personnel as assigned by the Head Coach.
- Assist the Head Coach with implementing program expectations, team rules, and disciplinary procedures.
- Perform duties assigned by the Head Coach, Athletic Director, or Principal that are related to the operation of the athletic program.
- Assist the Head Coach with maintaining participation records and monitoring student-athlete eligibility for Extracurricular/Interscholastic Physical Education Credit.
Relationships and Communication
- Cooperate fully with the Head Coach, Principal, Athletic Director, faculty, staff, and district administration.
- Establish and maintain positive and professional relationships with student-athletes, parents/guardians, faculty, community members, officials, opponents, and media representatives.
- Communicate with parents and guardians only through approved channels and in accordance with program and district expectations.
- Refer significant parent concerns or program matters to the Head Coach when appropriate.
- Attend required meetings, clinics, professional development activities, and athletic department functions as directed.
- Represent the school and athletic program professionally in all verbal, written, electronic, and social media communications.
- Refrain from making unauthorized public statements on behalf of the school, athletic department, or athletic program.
Student-Athlete Development
- Support the academic achievement and eligibility of all student-athletes.
- Encourage positive conduct, attendance, citizenship, and academic responsibility.
- Teach and model appropriate citizenship, sportsmanship, leadership, self-discipline, and respect.
- Foster an environment that supports the mental, emotional, physical, and social well-being of student-athletes.
- Encourage student-athletes to develop responsibility, accountability, teamwork, and character.
- Promote team cohesion and a positive team culture rooted in respect, hard work, and integrity.
Practice Planning and Instruction
- Assist in organizing and conducting safe, structured, and developmentally appropriate practices.
- Teach sport-specific skills, strategies, and techniques as assigned by the Head Coach.
- Assist with the implementation of seasonal, weekly, and daily practice plans.
- Conduct individual, small-group, or position-specific instruction as assigned.
- Assist in conditioning programs consistent with accepted safety standards and NFHS best practices.
- Ensure assigned activities are physically safe, age-appropriate, and appropriate to participants' skill levels.
- Devote the time and energy necessary to fulfill coaching responsibilities before, during, and after the season, including approved offseason activities.
Practice Facility Preparation and Safety
- Arrive at practice facilities prior to student-athlete arrival as directed by the Head Coach.
- Assist in assessing facility conditions, equipment readiness, and overall safety.
- Inspect assigned practice and competition areas for potential hazards and report concerns immediately to the Head Coach.
- Assist in organizing instructional, training, and safety equipment before activities begin.
- Assist with establishing hydration stations and monitoring environmental conditions.
- Communicate actual or potential safety concerns immediately to the Head Coach.
- Assist with securing, storing, and maintaining equipment following practices and activities.
- Help ensure facilities are cleaned, secured, and maintained according to school procedures.
Contest Responsibilities
- Assist with team preparation and participation before, during, and after contests.
- Comply with all WVSSAC, league, conference, and event regulations.
- Demonstrate professionalism and self-control throughout all contests.
- Support and enforce sportsmanship expectations among student-athletes and spectators.
- Maintain supervision of assigned student-athletes throughout contests and related activities.
- Manage assigned responsibilities on the sideline, bench, court, field, pool, mat, course, track, or competition area.
- Ensure student-athletes remain appropriately supervised and in designated areas during contests.
- Remain with the team through the conclusion of contests and until students have been properly released or transported
Game and Event Safety Preparation
- Assist in ensuring all required equipment, uniforms, communication devices, medical supplies, first aid kits, and contest materials are available and prepared prior to events.
- Familiarize themselves with emergency procedures before each contest.
- Be knowledgeable of emergency contacts, AED locations, and emergency access routes.
- Assist with pre-event safety preparations and inspections.
- Assist with post-event cleanup, equipment storage, facility security, and student dismissal procedures.
- Assist with preparing equipment and supplies for away contests and team travel.
Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and Medical Preparedness
- Be familiar with and assist in implementing the school's Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
- Understand emergency procedures applicable to practices, contests, conditioning sessions, and team activities.
- Assist in ensuring emergency contact information and medical information are accessible when required.
- Know the location of AEDs, first aid kits, and emergency equipment used at team activities.
- Assist certified athletic trainers, school nurses, emergency medical personnel, and the Head Coach during emergency situations.
- Immediately notify the Head Coach and appropriate medical personnel of injuries, illnesses, accidents, or emergency situations.
Student Supervision and Welfare
- Maintain active, attentive, and continuous supervision of assigned student-athletes during practices, contests, conditioning sessions, travel, meetings, and team activities.
- Never leave assigned student-athletes unsupervised during school-sponsored athletic activities.
- Ensure student-athletes remain in authorized and supervised areas before, during, and after activities.
- Monitor student behavior and enforce team rules fairly and consistently.
- Provide supervision during transitional periods, including arrival, dismissal, locker room access, meetings, and transportation activities.
- Promptly address and report behavioral concerns, safety concerns, harassment, bullying, hazing, or other conduct inconsistent with school policy or student welfare.
- Immediately report concerns to the Head Coach, Athletic Director, or administration as appropriate.
Injury Management and Student Health
- Prioritize student-athlete health and safety above competitive considerations.
- Immediately report all injuries, illnesses, suspected concussions, heat-related illnesses, cardiac symptoms, or other medical concerns to the Head Coach and appropriate medical personnel.
- Never allow a student-athlete to return to participation without required medical clearance when mandated by law, policy, or protocol.
- Never minimize, dismiss, or discourage reporting of injuries, symptoms, or health concerns.
- Follow all district, WVSSAC, NFHS, and medical protocols regarding concussion management, heat acclimatization, sudden cardiac arrest awareness, and injury prevention.
Equipment and Facility Management
- Assist with the inventory, care, security, issuance, collection, and storage of uniforms and equipment.
- Assist in maintaining athletic facilities in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
- Inspect assigned equipment and practice areas prior to activities and report concerns immediately.
- Assist with end-of-season equipment collection and inventory procedures.
- Help secure facilities and equipment following practices, contests, and team activities.
Budget and Program Administration
- Assist the Head Coach with the administration and operation of the athletic program.
- Follow all district purchasing procedures and financial controls.
- Assist with maintaining accurate inventories and records.
- Support the completion of all required reports, rosters, eligibility documentation, inventories, and end-of-season requirements.
- Assist with scheduling and operational needs with the Head Coach.
- Ensure all required forms and documentation are submitted accurately and on time.
Travel and Event Supervision
- Supervise assigned student-athletes during transportation, contests, meals, overnight trips, and other program-related activities.
- Assist in maintaining appropriate supervision during team travel.
- Participate in player accountability procedures, including attendance verification and headcounts.
- Ensure student-athletes remain in authorized areas and under appropriate supervision at all times.
- Report and document behavioral, disciplinary, or safety concerns as required.
- Assist the Head Coach in maintaining student-athlete safety and supervision throughout travel activities.
Locker Room and Facility Supervision
- Provide appropriate locker room supervision consistent with district policy, Title IX requirements, and professional standards.
- Ensure student-athletes maintain respectful, safe, and appropriate conduct in locker rooms and team facilities.
- Never be alone with a single student-athlete in a locker room, hotel room, vehicle, office, or other private setting except as specifically permitted by school policy and approved supervisory protocols.
- Maintain professional boundaries with all students at all times.
- Immediately report concerns related to student safety, harassment, discrimination, abuse, neglect, or boundary violations to appropriate administrators and authorities.
- Follow all supervision requirements established by the Head Coach and school administration.
Sportsmanship and Professional Conduct
- Demonstrate high ideals, ethical behavior, and professional conduct at all times.
- Recognize and promote the educational purpose of interscholastic athletics.
- Display appropriate sportsmanship as both a winner and a loser.
- Accept officiating decisions without public displays of dissatisfaction or unsportsmanlike conduct.
