Position Description:
The Library Assistant III supports the success of the Ekstrom Library at the University of Louisville by providing exemplary customer service and overseeing a team of student employees to maintain routine day-to-day operations of the library.
The Library Assistant III will oversee the Access and User Services Department's student employees (approximately 25-45 at any one time) by recruiting, training, supervising, and scheduling students to meet departmental needs. The position oversees departmental student wage budget, must be able to understand Federal Work Study requirements, and oversees any disciplinary actions for the department's students. This position may assist in RRS functions. Grade 4 (hourly)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Student Personnel Management (65%)
- Supervises the employee life cycle (ie: recruitment, employment, evaluation, and release) of student employees
- Schedule and ensure adequate coverage during library hours for three separate desks (west desk, east desk, and tech desk).
- Train all student employees in library policies, procedures, and general information.
- Maintain accurate attendance records, provide timecards for students, approve work assignments and schedule change requests
Library Administration (35%)
- Provide prompt, courteous service at the public desks and administer departmental services, including interpretation of library policies and procedures to patrons.
- Develop the department's user service model and lead training for students and all employees inservice training.
- Maintain knowledge of all departmental procedures and workflows to better assign and monitor student assistant tasks. Create and maintain student accounts for departmental Teams Shifts.
- Oversees the efficient functioning of all activities in the RRS including picks, stores, loading and audits during evening hours and as backup for the day shift. Reports any issues involving the RRS to Day Supervisor.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1-2 years of supervisory experience
- Experience in academic libraries
- Experience in customer service-related environment
- Two years of experience in libraries or with library storage systems
- Microsoft Office Suite - i.e. Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Library management system (WMS)
- Effective oral and written communication skills
