Job description

Definitionย &ย Purposeย 

Under the supervision of theย Assistantย Director-Recreationalย Sports Programs and Facility Operations, the Fitness Instructors teach a variety of classes currently offered within the Group Exercise and Instructional Class Program. The staffย is responsible forย developing individualย classย lesson plans, being familiar withย various stylesย of class formats offered, supervising class participants, and leading instructional sessions.ย 

This position is based at the Cal Poly Maritime Academy on the Cal Poly Solano Campus in Vallejo, CA.ย 

Requirements

Educationalย Requirementsย &ย Qualifying Experienceย 
  • Must be a currently enrolled studentย at Cal Poly with a minimum of 6 units. Graduate students must carry 4 units.ย 
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, muscular function, exercise program implementation, safe group exercise, or instructional procedures and use of related class materials and/or equipment.ย 
  • Professional instructor certification in related field or prior trainingย required.ย 
  • Extensive knowledge of classes being taught.ย 
  • Ability to be highly organized and have good planning skills.ย 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.ย 
  • Current American Red Cross certification(or equivalent)in the following: AdultFirst Aid,CPR,andAEDisrequiredย withinย 30 daysย of hire, training provided by ASI.ย 
  • Understanding ofย current trends in area of expertise.ย 
  • Previousย experience in supervising and meeting participantsย in an instructional environment.ย 
  • Ability to learn new formats.ย 
  • Consistent attendance at continuing education workshops, lectures, and conferences.ย 
Supervisory Responsibilitiesย 
  • Superviseย class participants.ย 
Essential Dutiesย &ย Responsibilitiesย 
  • Lead exercise classes and instructional sessions.ย 
  • Maintain familiarity with evacuationย plansย forย workย area.ย 
  • Attend all mandatory meetings, workshops, andย trainings.ย 
  • Provide quality customer service forย all staff andย members.ย 
  • Maintain a working relationship with staff and co-workers.ย 
  • Adhere to and enforce allย PEACย departmental policies and procedures.ย 
  • Commitment to student development and leadership.ย 
  • Maintainย a clean and invitingย instructional area.ย 
Other Dutiesย &ย Responsibilitiesย 
  • The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and isย requiredย toย comply withย the requirementsย set forth inย ASI policy as a condition of their employment.ย 
  • Other duties as assigned.ย 
Period of Employmentย 

Employment with this organization is of an "at will" nature, which means that the employee may resign at anyย timeย and ASI may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.ย 

Benefits

Compensationย &ย Hoursย 
  • Hourly Pay Range: $18.00 per hour-32.00 per hour for instruction time, $16.90 per hour-$16.90 per hour for training and meeting time.ย 
  • Hourly Pay Rate: $18.00 per hour-$32.00 per hour based on experience for instruction time, $16.90 per hour for training and meetingย time.ย 
  • Maximum 20 hours per week.

May require workingย early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays.ย 

Requires a minimum of Fall 2026 work availability.
