Job description

MUST BE A STUDENT AT BRYAN COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Responsible for the efficient and orderly registration of patients and the collection of payments at the time services are rendered. Obtains accurate and complete patient demographic and financial information, obtains required consents and authorizations and ensures patients are aware of Bryan Heart policies, procedures and third party payer requirements. Provides additional directions and information to ensure continuity of patient care.
PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.
2. *Understands and operationalizes federal regulations regarding COBRA, Medicare, OSHA and HIPAA; reports safety and customer concerns.
3. *Interviews and registers incoming patients in person; obtains and data enters patient demographic and financial information in the Bryan Heart computer systems; ensures data integrity, completeness and confidentiality in a variety of areas as assigned by supervisor.
4. *Supports the financial goals of Bryan Heart by ensuring timely collection of patient deductibles, co-insurance and deposits; identifies underinsured, uninsured and self-pay patients for immediate referral to patient accounts.
5. *Collects payments according to procedure, provides receipts and balances petty cash.
6. *Prepares and provides patients with an estimate, if one is warranted, for their expected services. Collects and/or counsels on expected payment due.
7. *Updates patient demographic and financial information to ensure complete and accurate files; enters on-line computer comments to assist others who access the patient record.
8. *Follows computer downtime procedures.
9. *Reads, reviews and operationalizes new/revised policies/procedures via email, postings, mailings, voice mail and meetings.
10. *Completes additional patient registration work.
11. Trains peers and/or volunteers on specific duties utilizing training manuals and on-the-job coaching.
12. *Follows Bryan Heart protocols in communicating and releasing patient information.
13. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
14. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.
15. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of federal regulations including COBRA, Medicare, OSHA and HIPAA.
2. Knowledge of third party payer requirements.
3. Knowledge of basic body mechanics and wheelchair operation.
4. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.
5. Knowledge of customer service philosophies and practices.
6. Skill in the operation of standard keyboard and including 10-key pad.
7. Ability to exercise courtesy and professionalism in receiving office callers and visitors.
8. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.
9. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
10. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel, medical staff, volunteer and ancillary departments including diverse patient populations.
11. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills.
12. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.
13. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalency required. Prior office experience in a medical setting preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology desired. Must be 19 years of age to witness legal consents.
