KL&A has a unique opportunity for estimators experienced in the steel industry. This position supports our steel construction management activities through pre-construction services, estimating, and assisting structural engineers with constructability and costs. We are looking for someone to join one of our Colorado offices (Loveland, Golden) for an in-person position and you must be willing to travel between offices, if needed.
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of structural engineering principles, excellent analytical skills, and expertise in preconstruction processes. This includes conceptual estimating, value engineering, design coordination, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Duties:
  • Prepare detailed take-off's and quantity surveys for structural steel, mass timber, and miscellaneous metals integrating preconstruction considerations and utilizing tools such as Revit, Bluebeam, Excel, and a proprietary Cost Modeler
  • Analyze project specifications, drawings, and other documents to develop a complete scope of work considering both structural engineering aspects and preconstruction aspects
  • Develop plans for the logistics aspects including site constraints, schedule, sequencing, and safety while helping develop innovative construction means and methods to increase efficiency
  • Collaborate with structural engineers, architects, fabricators, erectors, and general contractors and provide input during the design phase, offering valuable insights to optimize project costs, schedule, and constructability.
  • Assist with value engineering and troubleshoot potential field and fabrication problems
  • Evaluate subcontractor and supplier capabilities, techniques, and quotes, negotiating the best prices and terms, and providing input on value engineering opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers, subcontractors, and other industry professionals, fostering partnerships that enhance the preconstruction process.
  • Understand building codes and verify estimating efforts are compliant
  • Actively participating in a team environment

Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum BS in Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or Construction Management
  • Must be thorough with high attention to detail
  • Self-starter and active problem solver with a mindset of growth and curiosity.
  • Working familiarity with standard commercial building codes
  • Revit experience or willingness to learn
  • Understanding of standard business software such as Outlook, Excel, and Bluebeam

Bonus Qualifications:
  • 3 years of either structural engineering or 4 years of estimating experience on steel structures and miscellaneous metals
  • Experience working as an estimator on commercial steel projects
  • MS with an emphasis in structures or experience estimating steel buildings preferred
  • Experience working for a steel fabrication or erection company
  • Proficiency with Revit
  • Proficiency working in Bluebeam

Salary: $85,000 - $110,000 Annually
