Job description

Seeking an experienced and highly organized Structural Steel Quality Control Manager to support our structural steel erector and fabricator clients on active construction projects.

This position is responsible for managing and coordinating structural steel quality control activities from fabrication through erection. The ideal candidate must have a strong understanding of structural steel construction, applicable codes and standards, inspection requirements, project documentation, and field operations.

This is a detail-intensive position requiring excellent organization, communication, documentation, and follow-through. The QC Manager will work closely with our clients, project management teams, field supervision, inspectors, general contractors, engineers, and other project stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate structural steel quality control activities for steel fabricator and erector clients
  • Develop, implement, and maintain project-specific Quality Control Plans and procedures
  • Review structural drawings, shop drawings, specifications, RFIs, approved submittals, and project requirements
  • Understand and apply applicable AWS, AISC, RCSC, IBC and project-specific requirements
  • Track structural steel fabrication and erection progress in the field
  • Maintain detailed tracking logs for inspections, welds, bolting, deficiencies, NCRs, RFIs, repairs, and outstanding QC items
  • Coordinate inspection activities with field personnel and third-party/special inspection agencies
  • Attend project coordination, quality, progress, and construction meetings
  • Represent the client professionally during meetings and discussions regarding structural steel quality
  • Monitor inspection and testing requirements to ensure required work is completed and properly documented
  • Review daily inspection reports and supporting QC documentation for accuracy and completeness
  • Track deficiencies and nonconforming work through resolution and closeout
  • Coordinate corrective actions and repairs with project teams
  • Monitor field activities to identify potential quality issues before they impact project schedule or closeout
  • Assist with turnover packages, final documentation, and project closeout
  • Maintain organized and complete electronic project records
  • Provide regular QC and field-progress updates to clients and project management
  • Work closely with steel erection supervision to ensure quality requirements are incorporated into field operations


Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication and erection
  • Working knowledge of structural welding, high-strength bolting, steel erection, and inspection practices
  • Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, welding symbols, specifications, and project documents
  • Familiarity with applicable AWS, AISC, RCSC and building code requirements
  • Extremely organized and detail-oriented
  • Strong ability to manage multiple open items, deadlines, inspections, and documentation simultaneously
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable attending and participating in contractor and client meetings
  • Ability to communicate effectively with superintendents, project managers, inspectors, engineers, and general contractors
  • Strong computer skills and ability to maintain detailed electronic logs, spreadsheets, reports, and project documentation
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize responsibilities, and follow issues through final resolution


Preferred Qualifications

No specific certification is required for this position. However, the following are preferred:

  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
  • ICC Structural Steel & Bolting Special Inspector
  • ICC Structural Welding Special Inspector
  • Previous structural steel QC management or coordination experience
  • Previous experience working directly for a structural steel fabricator or erector
  • Experience on large commercial, industrial, data center, or infrastructure projects
