Job description

About Littell Steel

Littell Steel is a long-established structural steel fabricator located in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, specializing in complex bridge and structural steel fabrication.

We are seeking an experienced Quality Control Manager to lead day-to-day product inspection and quality control within our fabrication facility.

This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who knows structural steel fabrication, understands welding and dimensional inspection, is comfortable working directly with fabricators and inspectors on the shop floor, and takes pride in making sure the steel leaving the facility is right.

The Role

The Quality Control Manager serves as Littell Steel's Chief Inspector and shop-floor quality leader, responsible for ensuring fabricated steel meets approved drawings, contract specifications, applicable codes, and customer requirements before shipment.

This is not a desk-only quality position. The successful candidate will spend significant time in the fabrication shop inspecting work, working with production personnel, coordinating customer and third-party inspections, resolving quality issues, and ensuring required inspection documentation is complete.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day Quality Control activities throughout the fabrication shop.
  • Inspect structural steel for compliance with approved shop drawings, specifications, AWS requirements, and applicable AISC standards.
  • Perform and oversee weld, fit-up, and visual inspections.
  • Perform dimensional inspections of fabricated members, including lengths, hole locations, camber, sweep, connections, assemblies, and overall geometry.
  • Verify material identification and traceability throughout fabrication.
  • Inspect and document surface preparation and coating requirements as applicable.
  • Coordinate required NDT activities, including UT and MT, with internal or third-party inspectors.
  • Work directly with outside inspectors representing customers, state DOTs, railroads, owners, and other agencies.
  • Identify and document nonconforming work and coordinate appropriate repairs or corrective actions with production.
  • Verify completed repairs and final disposition of nonconforming work.
  • Review inspection records and required quality documentation for completeness.
  • Perform final inspections and authorize product release prior to shipment.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop QC inspectors and promote consistent inspection practices throughout the facility.
  • Work collaboratively with Production, Project Management, Engineering, and Quality Assurance to identify problems early and minimize rework.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate combines strong technical inspection knowledge with practical fabrication experience and the ability to work effectively with people on the shop floor.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of Quality Control, inspection, or closely related experience in structural steel fabrication, bridge fabrication, heavy manufacturing, or a similar environment.
  • Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication processes.
  • Strong understanding of welding processes and weld inspection.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural steel shop drawings.
  • Experience performing dimensional inspections of fabricated steel.
  • Working knowledge of AWS D1.1 and/or AWS D1.5.
  • Ability to make sound, independent inspection decisions.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with welders, fitters, foremen, project managers, customers, and outside inspectors.

Strongly Preferred

  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
  • Experience working in an AISC-certified structural steel fabrication facility
  • Bridge fabrication experience
  • AWS D1.5 experience
  • Experience with Fracture Critical fabrication requirements
  • Knowledge of NDT methods, including UT and MT
  • Coating and surface preparation inspection experience
  • Experience with state DOT or railroad fabrication requirements
  • Previous QC leadership or supervisory experience
