What Is a Structural Fitter?

A structural fitter is a metal worker who produces building materials for construction projects, such as for tall buildings and container ships. Your duties and responsibilities include the layout and assembly of parts that make up a structure, and you may weld pieces or use other tools, such as jack bars, turnbuckles, pry bars, hammers, or grinders to ensure that the materials align perfectly. Sometimes you move the parts manually while for larger jobs you use cranes or other equipment to move pieces into place.

What are Structural Fitters?

Structural Fitters are skilled tradespeople who assemble, install, and repair structural components in construction and manufacturing projects, such as bridges, buildings, and ships. They work with metal frameworks, beams, and other structural materials, interpreting blueprints and ensuring that all parts are accurately positioned and securely fastened. Their work is essential for the safety and stability of large structures, and they often collaborate closely with welders, engineers, and other construction professionals.

How to become a structural fitter?

To become a structural fitter, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and complete an apprenticeship or technical training program in metalworking, welding, or fabrication. Skills in reading blueprints, using hand and power tools, and understanding safety procedures are essential, and some positions may require relevant certifications or licenses. Gaining experience through on-the-job training is common in this trade.

What is the most paid job in construction?

In construction, project managers and construction executives tend to be the highest-paid roles, often earning six-figure salaries due to their responsibility for overseeing large projects, budgets, and teams. Specialized roles such as civil engineers, construction managers, and safety directors also command high wages, especially with experience and relevant certifications.
