Why do welders drink milk after welding?

Welders, including those in fitter roles, often drink milk after welding to help soothe and protect the stomach from the irritants in welding fumes and to replenish calcium lost during exposure. Milk contains proteins and nutrients that can aid in reducing gastrointestinal discomfort caused by inhaled fumes or accidental ingestion of small particles. However, this practice is more traditional than scientifically proven and is not a standard safety requirement.
