How much do structural engineering lecturer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 5, 2026, the average yearly pay for structural engineering lecturer in the United States is $90,585.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $60,000.00 and $110,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Engineering Lecturer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineering Lecturer, you need an advanced degree in structural or civil engineering, deep subject expertise, and prior teaching or research experience. Familiarity with structural analysis software (such as SAP2000 or ETABS), CAD tools, and accreditation standards is typically expected. Outstanding communication, mentorship, and organizational skills help engage students and foster a supportive learning environment. These competencies are crucial for effectively conveying complex concepts, ensuring academic rigor, and preparing students for engineering careers.

How does a Structural Engineering Lecturer typically balance teaching responsibilities with research and industry engagement?

As a Structural Engineering Lecturer, you'll often divide your time between preparing and delivering lectures, supervising student projects, conducting your own research, and engaging with industry partners. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong organizational skills and effective time management. Many lecturers find that integrating real-world industry projects into their teaching can enrich the student learning experience while also fostering valuable industry relationships and keeping research aligned with current professional practice. Collaboration with colleagues across departments and regular attendance at academic or industry conferences are also common aspects of the role.

What does a Structural Engineering Lecturer do?

A Structural Engineering Lecturer is responsible for teaching courses related to structural engineering at a university or college level. They design curricula, deliver lectures, lead laboratory sessions, and assess student performance. In addition to teaching, they may conduct research, publish academic papers, and supervise student projects. Lecturers also stay updated with industry advancements and may collaborate with engineering firms or professional bodies.

What is the difference between Structural Engineering Lecturer vs Structural Engineer?

AspectStructural Engineering LecturerStructural Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically a master's or Ph.D. in structural engineering or related field; teaching certifications may be preferredBachelor's or master's degree in civil or structural engineering; professional engineering license often required
Work EnvironmentAcademic settings such as universities and colleges, primarily teaching and researchDesign, analysis, and construction sites; consulting firms, construction companies, or government agencies

Department Summary
The Aerospace Engineering Department at SJSU offers an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science (BSAE) and a Master of Science (MSAE) in Aerospace Engineering. Hands-on, project-based curricula and state-of-the-art pedagogy prepare our students for professional careers in aerospace engineering fields, such as aircraft and space systems research, design, development, testing, and integration. The Department has approximately 480 undergraduate and 80 graduate students.
Students in the MSAE Program can specialize in sustainable aviation concepts, aerospace structural design, astrodynamics, space systems engineering, hypersonics or propulsion.  They have opportunities to work with AE faculty and NASA engineers to design, build, test, and launch microsatellites like the TechEdSat, participate in the design, building, and testing of our brand new hypersonic facility, learn how to use machine/deep learning for structural health monitoring, optimize spacecraft trajectories or explore the potential of electric and hybrid propulsion systems for general aviation, commuter, and large air transports.  In addition, students can participate in exciting extra-curricular projects, such as the Spaceport America Cup. MSAE students are encouraged to present their work in professional conferences such as the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics SciTech, the International Planetary Probe Workshop, and the International Symposium on Sustainable Aviation.
